F.U.N. in the sun

I was a little overwhelmed at first, since I have never seen that many dealers in one place at the shows I normally visit (TOREX, Niagara). Spent about 4 hours looking at coins, which was fantastic (even though by hour 3 I couldn't stand looking at another Morgan dollar). There were a number of dealers that had World inventory. Met Josh (Civitas) for the first time in-person. He was much younger than I assumed, which is always interesting in the case of creating your opinion of someone without ever seeing them in-person. Josh also sold me an amazing Chihuahua 8 Reales piece, which I simply love! It's one of the pieces struck over a previous cast issue with lots of character. I also spent some time over at Daniel Sedwick's table, and the Atocha table, looking at shipwreck pieces, checked-out the Hobo Nickel society table and picked-up a submission packet from NGC (want to check-out NCS services). Overall experience - a little overwhelming, but definitely fun!

I also picked-up an 1826 Zacatecas 8 Reales in low-mid VF, a raw 1772 8 Reales with upside-down assayer initials "FM" in nice dark XF, another 181_ Struck-over-Cast Chihuahua issue and an 1788 8 Reales in NGC XF40 holder.

I am still contemplating if I should return today, since that may potentially lead to spending way more over the allocated budget.

Will post pictures once I am back in Toronto next weekend.

Roman, go find Richard and Don from Rowan Coin and Collectibles. That's my local shop where I get all my goodies. They have my 1784 1/6th Thaler Wildman Double Strike down there to get slabbed. Tell them Todd said to say hey, oh and wish Richard a happy 69th birthday!! Be safe!

Can you imagine a US coin show without Morgan dollars? There would be 75% less coins to look at.
And by all means, Roman, go back for more. After all, it's only money. image

Josh knows alot about many different areas of numismatics. I have met him before too and he clearly is wise beyond his years.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

I understand about the overload of coins. Sometimes you need a day of rest then hit the show on sunday.

    Thanks for the report.

Sounds like you picked up some nice material and I look forward to the pictures so I can be even more envious.

I met Josh and Julian along with many dealers that I used to do shows with. It was a wonderful afternoon, but no Victoria medals and only a modern 5 pound piece with a YH Victoria. Here is a picture of the entry to the bourse. Inside picture were forbidden by Security. I almost lost my camera for attempting to take one inside those doors.image

So I took that advice and went back today. Lots of dealers were already packing-up. ICG was pretty active at the show - I've heard a number of announcements about free grade opinions and submission help. I asked if they encapsulated Proclamation coinage and to my surprise the answer was "no". I managed to find a nice 1912 Caballito in NGC MS63 for the price I was willing to pay (Toned, too). The dealer that sold me the Caballito was a pretty interesting guy. We talked about Spanish Colonials, for a bit, as well as some counter-stamp issues of Ferdinand VII and Isabella II. He had a really nice ICG-slabbed pillar with F.7.o. counterstamp of Philippines, but he didn't have his notes with him, so he wasn't sure how to price it. I should have gotten his card, since he's still "Carl from table 659" to me.

Heritage had some gold nuggets on display, with the one called "Boot of Cortez" as a centerpiece. Weighing at something like 390 ounces it was a jaw-dropper.

Edit: Carl mentioned that he bought the Caballito at a Heritage auction in 2005, so I looked it up - here it is. Needless to say, it looks much better than the scans in the lot description image

Edit2: found the picture of the nugget:

Strange you remember him that way... when I was in college I used to remember the girls I dated like that. Jennifer from 203, or LIndsay from 402, and Amber from 803. Hah.... those were the days!

I looked at his 11 and 12, both NGC 63. Was going to pick up the 11 because it was a nice match with my 10, but forgot to after going through his NZ raw box for hours! Must have bought 30 coins from him; all NZ pre-decimal. Very nice stuff.

I'm glad you were able to pick some things up from him, Filam. I remember that '11 - it was nice and white and would've matched your '10 nicely.

I picked up some gem coins. The 1946 Lichtenstein 100 and 50 franc restrikes ful gems. A very choice 1954 mexico 5 pesos. A full red 1870 2 pesos from Uruguay. Some nice original portrait 8 reales from Mexcico in AU pcgs slabbed, a nice NGC AU 58 Honduras peso 1891 overdate, and a anacs au 50 1840 central america republica 8 reale. Thanks, I will. One more coin I found that was interesting, a 1987 Cuba 20 peso in gem proof. I paid $ 75 dollars for it and there is only 333 minted. Maybe one day Cuba will be free. image

Update: Went back today to sell some modern Philippine gold commemoratives (with gold at $891/oz, couldn't go wrong). Show was dead. Most dealers had packed up. Luckily Carl was still there. Picked up the 1911 Mexican Peso, a stunning 1918 Mexican Peso in PCGS 63 and a top pop 1915 Cuban 1 Peso in PCGS 67. Will attempt to scan. Overall show had limited pickings in the world coin department, especially better grades and dates. Hopefully next year FUN will not conflict with NY!
