Help w/ experimental golden alloy planchets and 1999 State quarter dies

Can anyone tell me how to verify if a coin is actually one of the experimental golden alloy planchets? Besides submitting, is there any way to judge? I am trying to get better photos of the one I have.. I had not heard of these examples until I came across a story online about the FUN show.....any help is appreciated. imageimage

    cool find indeed.

I just think it is toned

but, an accurate scale should tell you lots
  • I checked PCGS' coin facts and there are several ways to check.. weighing might be best way. All the experimental pieces weigh more than normal at 5.9 - 6.3 grams ...other than the reeding, nothing looks different ...is it possible this is a gold plated piece of junk? I've never seen one so I am not sure...
  • hmm.. i can see it now. anyone know if any of the experimental alloy coins made it out into circulation?
  • from 9 o'clock to 12 o'clock on the reverse rim it appears the gold has been worn off, exposing clad underneath. Leads me to believe that your piece was one of those gold plated pieces sold by QVC and HSN that was spent.

yeah ,that could be ..the coin has some wear to it but nothing is too exposed and the devices arent over-clogged or whatever takes place when plated..I'm no expert but thats why I'm looking for answers....I will try to get it weighed in the next day or so to be sure.

I just had to dredge up this old thread-- I'd never even heard of golden alloy state quarters until I came across one on Ebay...

    Experimental Delaware quarter, PCGS graded

WOW.. I actually really like the looks of it. It passes my "showstopper" muster for sure.

    Please post a nice clear
scan of both sides of the
coin, and I should be able
to tell you what you have.

Not to be negative, but the
    odds are greatly against your
    piece being one of those
    experimental planchet strikes.

Let's see what it looks like,
    and go from there.......

This is a "resurrected" thread from 2008 Fred.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    Lee,

That's what I get for reading these
posts when I get to the office, but
    before I have my coffee.

I never saw the earlier dates in the
    thread....my bad........

Kiyote - stop by my table at
    Central States, ANA Denver,
Long Beach, or the ANA Phily.

I have a Delaware and Penn.
    Experimental Planchet, both
PCGS MS-64. I'd be glad to
    show them to you in-hand.
