Making a kid happy.

I teach in the AWANA program at my church (kids ages 5-7) on Tuesday nights. Just before Christmas I was twirling in my hand the 1888 Morgan that I carry with me as a pocket piece when a little 7-year old girl walked up and says "what's that??" so I told her and she replies "I collect coins too!" and she proceeded to tell me about her collection of state quarters and I could see she was really excited about them.

Well, this past Tuesday night we resumed after the christmas break and I saw her in the game room with her mom. I went over to her and I got down to her level (I'm 6'4" so it was a long way down) and told her "I have a little gift for you" and presented her with a 1937 French 1-Franc coin and a 1929 Buffalo Nickel in 2x2's and told her "these are for your collection". The look on her face was priceless! She was so excited she couldn't contain herself and the rest of the evening she carried those coins around in her hand showing them off. Her mom later told me that they would go on the internet together and learn what was happening in France in 1937 and the USA in 1929 because her daughter really loves history. Evidently whenever she gets a new state quarter they go online and learn about the history of the state and the symbolism of the coin design. I was impressed as most kids that age just like money because they can spend it.

Obviously a YN with potential! image

AHHHhhhhh the old Awana programs... I remember that from back in the day. The last level I remember being at was Pioneer. Can't remember what came before that. I think it was Cubs and Bears.... It's been 20 years ago. Wow....

And here I thought the story was you gave her the Morgan!................... until I remembered we were on the Darkside forum............image

If it's ok with her mom, pass me her addy (or have me send them to her via you) & I'll send some neat Darkside stuff over to her as well - - sounds like she's into the coins for the same reasons that attracted me in the first place!image
