1) No problem with calling out an Ebay seller for a bad transaction. You can't do it on Ebay, and there's nowhere else to do it. Notice to other potential buyers is good.
2) Assume the worst and bid accordingly with most Ebay sellers, even if their feedback is splendid. The feedback section of Ebay is largely a joke. It doesn't encourage honesty in transaction satisfaction, but rather is set up to encourage more transactions. I would guess that if feedback reflected actual transaction satisfaction, most feedback ratings would be 75% or less positive.

<< <i>Jesus dude, stop buying raw. What you're doing is akin to buying raw 86-87 Fleer packs and leaving negs over and over complaining you got ripped off. The fact is most raw on ebay is vastly overgraded. You know this. At least in this case the guy offered a refund, so why leave him a neutral? I'm not saying your neg is deserved because it isn't, but why are you playing a game you keep losing over and over?
I buy raw on ebay also, but I do this knowing that most of it will be overgraded so I adjust my bids accordingly. >>
I agree.
VintageBasketballCard,
Spend a little more money and buy graded cards. The industry kind of moved that way from experiences similar to the ones you are having.
If you are going to look for the "find" on eBay, you will be disappointed 95% of the time. Also if you haven't realized, one's perceived condition of a card is somewhat subjective. Also with pictures in the description you can really get a feel for how the card would grade in your grading scheme.
I sell mostly graded. But when I have sold raw, I have had a couple similar experiences as a seller from buyers like you. I show a big scan and state that "I feel the card grades - XXXX. Please see the scan and judge for yourself." I still have had some guys return raw cards. I actually blocked them from bidding on my auctions. I also have just blocked you. I don't need that headache over raw cards that are relatively inexpensive.
If you want to stop being disappointed, buy graded cards. Also, I guarantee that all the guys who come here and show their raw "finds", also have a shelf full of junk cards they bought that were in lesser of a condition than they hoped for. I know I sure do.
It's a crapshoot. It would be like asking a dealer in Vegas for your money back when he dealt you a 16. You could tell him that the game is described as blackjack so you thought that was what you were getting...
<< <i>I would guess that if feedback reflected actual transaction satisfaction, most feedback ratings would be 75% or less positive. >>
How much of that 25% negative would be based on buyers who simply cannot be satisfied? I see sellers who have 4.5 stars in their Shipping & Handling Costs area although they offer free shipping on 100% of their items.
I buy quite a bit on ebay and can honestly say that I am satisfied with the product and the service I receive upwards of 95% of the time...probably closer to 98%.
Good point on buyers who simply cannot be satisfied. It is not always on the seller.........
I buy quite a bit too on Ebay - probably 80% of that is graded - and for the most part I'm pretty satisfied with what I get. When I buy raw, I either buy from sellers who I have bought from before, or I lowball a price in case the card is overgraded.
All I ask from sellers who are selling raw is that they employ a minimal amount of ethics, common sense, and reason. I think that's all anyone wants, and a reasonable return policy doesn't hurt either.

I think you're right! Couple that with the fact that other than the occasional bike spokes, most Gantner cards weren't handled as much as, say, a Sandberg. For good reason, I suppose. I guess the price I pay on most of my Gantners also helps in my satisfaction level. If I buy a lot of 30 Gantners for a couple bucks and get even one card that I'd send in, I'm satisfied. I don't expect the raw cards I buy to come back as 9 or 10...anything higher than an 8 is a bonus.

You missed the point. Your examples are ridiculous. Mtcards comment was concerning the transaction, not what happens after the transaction. Mtcards is RIGHT - the buyer's ONLY responsibility of the transaction is to PAY - nothing else! What happens after the transaction is different and your examples all occured after the transaction.
Your original statement was "Paying is not the only responsibility a buyer has." YES, IT IS! If the buyer has more responsibilities, please name ONE! I'm not talking about your "what if..." examples. Please name ONE additional responsibility that the buyer has?
With that said, I am certainly not siding with the buyer in this transaction. I think things could have been worked out before the neutral comment was left.

A satisfied buyer and seller equals a completed transaction.

EBAY is the modern extension of what many of us grew-up using: MAIL ORDER.
If a buyer would simply think about how much faster a mediocre EBAY transaction is compared to mail-order, their need for speed would bring them less stress.
99% of sellers disagree with me when I say, "I have NO interest in communicating with buyers." MY communication is SUPER FAST delivery of the paid for item. I do not want to waste my time exchanging emails. I want to invest MY time in packing items safely and delivering them FAST.
Folks Who Bite Get Bitten. Folks Who Don't Bite Get Eaten.
Storm that has been my argument about shipping times for along time. It seems people have forgotten that before Ebay if you ordered an item by mail it was commonly 6 to 8 weeks for delivery.
I too do not want to start a line of communication with a buyer or seller. I usually only email one if I have a question of concern or find something interesting. Like when i sold a Zach Grienke card to a man whose last name was Grienke, turns out it was his dad.

one thing I think that a buyer should do is at least let the seller know he has received the item. OP- You are not taking into consideration the subjective nature of grading. Many old time collectors have different grading standards than are employed today. What we call a near mint card today would have been mint in the late 80s. The exc's would have been near mint. The world of the third party grading company has changed this alot. Many old time collectors refuse to give up their standards. I think there was a story about Larry Fritsch being put off by grading when finally convinced to do it by SCD he got very mad when they basically told him his grading standards were not good enough.
Its like I have always said the differences between a 7 and 10 to an untrained eye are hard to see. The seller made an offer to refund and you refused and left him a neutral. Then you called him to as you put it discuss it. In my mind that tells me you called him to tell him off and got mad when he replied the way he did.
Where I come from an EX card has no creases. With that said I remember passing by that same dealer a few times when i was looking at some cards for my sets. I did not like his grading standards and some of his rules. With that said the OP is clearly in the wrong here as like mentioned the seller did have a return policy.
