I'm new to this forum, after viewing for some time in "Buy, Sell & Trade" I'm wondering how or what people do to prevent getting ripped off? To me, sending coins in trade or selling to someone I do not personally know, does not seem to make sense. Any input would be appreciated.

Many, if not most, of the transactions occur between people who get to know each other over time on one of the other forums. I have had probably a hundred transactions with forum members, from $20 to over $5000, and never had a problem.

This forum will identify and out a con in record time. You might want to enable your PM. That allows members to send you private messages. Then you can ask questions and ask for references on a particular person without being public.

I can only speak for myself, but I suspect that many members here are of similar opinion. I frequent the forum; rarely missing a day where I dont at least troll around. I also post with some regularity. Because I spend so much time on the forums, I recognize almost all of the frequent posters when they place a coin up for sell. I never worry about buying from these individuals because their reputation here is worth more than a few hundred bucks that I'd spend on their coin. Also, the guys that place (what I consider) strong coins up for sale ($1000+) are very well known here and have either sold coins here for some time or are collectors looking to unload a few pieces so they can buy an upgrade. I think the people that have not established themselves as a long standing board member would have more difficulty selling coins here.

I am new here myself. Ive frequented a few other forums for a few years now, but am new to this one. And Id say when dealing with someone new, start off small. Dont send them more money than you can afford to use. And when considering a larger transaction, with someone you are not familiar with. Ask around, do alittle research. Maybe ask some of the people that you have grown to trust. But from my experience, Ive never had any problems.

david said it right on. i my have sold a few coins list here and i have made many deal buying ,that i am very pleased. i have had not one bad deal here and think i never well. were i am not new , have ben lurking most of the time looking for good deals on coins and i have had many time needed some advice. it has allways been many step up the the plate not knowing me and has offerd help. let them get to know you and you know them. you will not be sorry. beleave me.

When making trades/buying from new members I sometimes ask for references, or ask they send first.
I can supply them with references from members here.
After some time you get a 'feeling' for members.

I am having 'issues' with a couple of deals I made here.
With one a member sent a package with delivery confirmation that says it was delivered but I have not seen it.
With another I sent a package with insurance, but not delivery confirmation. Now I have to go through the process to collect $50.
In BOTH instances, I trust the members I made the deals with MORE than I do the USPS that (supposedly) delivered the packages.

How do you prevent them from delivering to the wrong house, leaving packages on the porch, loosing or stealing your packages?

I am relatively new to this forum, but in the time I have been on here I have had about 15 transactions and every one has been silky smooth. When dealing with someone I am not too familiar with I do an advanced search to see what kinds of posts they have had and how the interaction is with other members.

I have had several members ship items to me prior to receiving payment.....

All of that and no fees!!!

And it's just like the real world, occasionally someone pulls something, or tries to, and then the show starts. This place is friendly, but very strict in terms of self-policing. Pay attention for a while, get a feel for the place.

I highly trust this forum. I once bought a coin (under $50) and didn't get to the PO until 2 days later to mail the check. I received the coin on the third day. THE SELLER MAILED THE COIN BEFORE HE RECEIVED PAYMENT! Then I felt bad that I didn't get the payment to him sooner. Now thats trust. Try that on FleaBay.

word gets around fast if there are slugs here...you can usually get the feel right away as to who to trust.... trust no one, its all on faith

Welcome!!!! I have purchased and sold many coins with other board members. If you are actively involved with coins and collecting most of our menbers will show up on other forums. Yoi will get to know who the dealers are, and who are just collectors. I have not had any bad experiences here and treasure the interaction with other members more than any one coin. If and when you decide to sell honesty and integriety should be the most important thing to you, the transactions will come.

Agree. I've had at least 25 out of 25 excellent transactions, buying and selling. And I have sent coins before receiving payment and/or cashing the checks in a few instances, as well as receiving coins before my check was cashed.
The integrity of the people here is outstanding....but so is the knowledge level. "Don't try to sell it for what it obviously ain't" is probably the best advice I can give. We all have minor differences of opinion, but gross overgrading, overdescription, over pricing, or bad attributing will be spotted right away.

Welcome. All of the replys to your question are right on!! Once in awhile we get a "ringer" here who is not exactly what he seems to be, but they are quickly identifed, vilified and basically shunned and forced to leave. That or they get outright banned. This is a nice place to buy, sell and trade coins with other members and like Ajia said, if the USPS doesn't mess up, there are seldom any problems. Hang around for awhile and you will get a pretty good read on the place.

I am new myself, and in fact am attempting my first sales, and most of the items I've offered for sale are over $400.

I wrestled with the trust factor, but for the most part my experience on these forums leads me to believe in most of the posters. I will take some steps to make both myself as well as my buyers as comfortable as possible (like offering PayPal, including all costs BEFORE I send the coin, honoring any statements I make, insuring all shipments on my dime, etc.), and I pretty much will expect the same from those from whom I buy.

I definitely can't afford to lose on even a $100 transaction, but to me this forum is way safer than places like Ebay.

In more than six years of dealing on BST, I have never once been ripped off... ever. It has happened (quite rarely) to other folks, as with any venue.

I do understand your caution, however. As a new member, if you were to start selling stuff here, you would perhaps have a harder time, since you are unknown here. Many of us have "known" each other on the forums for years and years, and the network and word-of-mouth spread fast, for better or for worse. Usually for the better, since bad apples are fortunately a rare breed around here, and when one does appear, he usually doesn't last long.

One thing to facilitate your trading here that you will need to do first thing is to go to your Profile and activate Private Messages. That is how most deals go down here. And PM's are archived, so you can always go back to review your trades. I cleaned out my PM archives about a year into my membership, and it contained several thousand private messages. Since then, I have accumulated another 25,269 private messages. Anytime I am trying to remember somebody, I go back and review our past transactions and/or communications.



Stick around, put in some time chatting on the forums, learn who people are, and in time, as a member of the community, you'll have a better sense of who your gut instinct tells you to trust and who you aren't sure about. Take my word as an oldtimer here that this is a very safe and stable place to do business, for the most part. A little caution is warranted, since you are new, but remember that others will be cautious about you, too, until you're established.

Thank you, everyone who replied. I feel more comfortable seeing nobody replied with having any problems. Perhaps I'm a bit cynical with the world these days; I thought the time when a deal could be made with a hand shake was past. It sounds like there's still hope, it will be nice to be involved in a community like this.

Indeed. I routinely ship coins to forum members before payment is received, and have gotten many coins (including some expensive ones) before I paid up.

D'you reckon I do that for my eBay customers? Not a chance, unless they're forum members.

I believe all the regulars who routinely use this forum to post/exchange info and buy/sell coins would avoid causing any discomfit when selling to fellow members. I also firmly believe most would agree, that ones reputation of being honest & having integrity in their dealings is of upmost importance here.

I would not hesitate to do business with the majority of the people on this board. Most are 100% honest, upstanding people who will go out of their way to provide good service with their trading/buying partner. I have had many transactions (as is evident in my sig line) with many people, with values ranging from $5 to over $500. I have had no problems to speak of in all of my transactions.

Trust those you know and have had prior dealings with. Newer people will find that using PayPal gives both the seller and the buyer some means of recoure if things do not work out.
I speak from experience of paying by check and having to go thru the hassel of getting the police involved 1500 miles away. When a check was chased and coins were not delivered. But that one bad case did not stop me from buying a coin on this board just a few days ago.
