1809 "Wings Up" Imperial Russian hinged

Hey guys. Got one of these beauties in AG condition (if I'm lucky, it rates a G). Can't show it because I can't figure out how to upload it and keep it under 50kb (if you've got any tips on that). Because of the hinge, I consider it mostly two century-old jewelry. St. Petersburg Mint, I think. Just want to know, what was the mintage on these, what are they going for, lately, on eBay (any condition), and, maybe, a good website for more on these type coins. Thanks.

image to the darkside! I use photobucket (it's free) for my image hosting and then can either place a link or add a direct connection in the posting with no size requirements link to photo bucket. As far as the value or other things you want to know I have no idea as this is out of my area of collecting and don't have my Krause handy at the moment to give you some idea. I am sure someone here with the answers you want will welcome you soon and have most (or all) of the information you want in just a short time.

    Once again welcome!

    Welcome to the forum kurtdog!

Russian pieces are tough to find anywhere these days. The only dealer that comes to mind outside of eBay is Rusty Pennies.

The best for you to ptart would probably be amazon.com to look for a Krause & Mishler foreign coin guide. They are available in 1601 - 1700, 1701 - 1800, 1801 - 1900, and modern foreign coins. In the bigger cities, the local library might have a copy also. It makes the average phone book look thin, but it has a wealth of info on coins. I have spend many hours studying my copy.

Its tough to price coins with mounts, loops, or hinges. I can't even swagger a guess in this area.

  • Thanks guys! My first rattle out of the cradle after lurking for about a month. image Feels good.

Hey, what about this? This coin/jewelry was passed down to me, and I have another one, an 1829 "Wings Down," in probably VG condition, that's double-hinged. Can I assume these were worn around the neck? The hinges, themselves, too, are exactly alike. In other words, is that suggestive these were "hinged" in the same place? Some years ago I talked to an antiques dealer who (apparently) had some familiarity with the history of this period, and drew a complete blank. In fact, for all he knew, these were "hinged," specially, at the Mint. Kind of a bummer trying to find authoritative sources on these historical/practical-type (as opposed to "strictly numismatic?") questions, let's just say, if you happen to know, or where I might want to look.
