Lance Armstrong Autographed Eagles

PCGS. One for every year symbolic of his TDF victories.

Say anything you want about this set, and say anything you want about Lance but I like this set VERY much and looked far and wide to find it.

  • As a former Tri Athelite, I LOVE IT. I loved cycling 50+ miles man, nothing better. I cant ride anymore, and he is a living legand. Great set man.

  • Lance is the man. I've just started riding a road bike late last year and I just fell in love with it. It's one of the most exhilarating things I've done in years. Coins are great and all but zipping up and down hills and through remote neighborhoods in Okinawa Japan ain't bad either.

I kind of missed the whole Lance Armstrong hype while it was happening but now that I'm riding I sure can appreciate what the man accomplished. And I took a 25km bike ride after getting these in the mail. I was so pumped up. I had ran 3 miles this morning to work and walked home about the same distance and then decided to break the bike out as well. More than I usually do in one day but these coins fired me up.

I didn't know they existed either but when I found out about them I hunted a set down.

BTW john, I am an avid Runner and Biker myself... and once you do that for any length of time you come to appreciate the amount of strength it takes to do what he and others like him do so well... I have been running strong for about 2 years and have only recently broken 8 miles.

  • 7 Mile bridge run in the Fl Keys is fun. Very pretty run over the ocean. Long and hot though.

To understand the discipline it takes to appreciate "dancing on your pedals" while ascending a steep incline is difficult to understand. Unless you have watched Lance or have been disciplined enough to get through the suffering enough to appreciate the dance, it is even more difficult.
Enjoy the ride. It is truly "Not about the bike" as Lance coined. But a nice road bike can entertain and inspire. Kinda like coins?
    Thanks for sharing John.....

  • He is truly a awesome guy.

  • Actually it's one of the few times a fingerprint may have helped. I wonder if Sheryl.........never mind.

I like the idea one guy had of colorizing the coin so Liberty has a yellow jersey.

This one isn't about the coins at all. This is all about Lance's Autograph, for me anyway. I like Silver Eagles and think Lance is an awesome athlete as well and I ride a Trek bike like he does. It's possible he's a little faster than me though.

    Perfect fit.

  • hey john did you see they are doing some sort of reality show on Discovery Channel about a couple guys training to ride a leg of the Tour de France? I believe I saw Lance making an appearance. Seems like a cool show.

  • SM,

I missed that one but would like for my daughter to see it. I'm trying to find her decent people who are decent role models. I try to toss her a new name or so every week of people who actually work hard, maybe overcome something, and provide some benefit to mankind. Lance fits that bill.

The jury is still out on Roger Clemens.

She's getting about that age where the kids in school are admiring the MTV bozos. My daughter can play piano like you would not believe and she's nine, if she wants to admire some musicians talent that's all wonderful, but she does not need to admire thug mentality or anything like that.

Is there a count of how many slabs he signed for each win?

Awesome set John. image I'm a big fan of Lance too.

  • Garsmith,

According to the PCGS Press releases he was to sign 10,000 coins. If it's 10,000 total that makes less than 1500 "sets" although I seem to recall finding a web page once that showed the bulk of these was signed in 2004 but I can't be sure and I can't find the page again.

John- I am a big fan of Lance, and after my diagnosis of Testicular Cancer, I have found him to be a true inspiration. I'm big into his LiveStrong campaign and have started reading his book, It's Not About the Bike: My Journey Back to Life. It's an excellent read so far. I just bought my first SAE and will hopefully be adding the rest to my set someday. A great guy.

I have this set as well even though I don't ride. I've been trying to get another set together but only have 3 coins and they are almost non-existant in the marketplace. I think the number signed is MUCH less than you think. These are the population numbers before PCGS removed them form the pop report and all are MS69. I don't know how many 2005s there are.

    2001-LA UNC $1 Walking Liberty - Lance 182
    2002-LA UNC $1 Walking Liberty - Lance 194
    2003-LA UNC $1 Walking Liberty - Lance 200
    2004-LA UNC $1 Walking Liberty - Lance 600
  • Paul,

I didn't even know he had a book but I'll swing by our library today and see if they have it. Lance is controversial, no doubt. Not in my mind, not in the least, but I think nobody wants to believe one person can be that dominant in this day and age when others have been caught.

I personally think some people are capable of remarkable feats and just plain old want it more than others. I guy that can win his LIFE back is that kind of guy.

He's an inspiration to me. He's running marathons now and I'm primarily a runner although you'll not see my name on any victory lists. I ran myself from massive couch potato to regular guy in the last 4 years or so. And I slacked off for a year or two and when I came back hard my legs were starting to give that feeling that they were going to quit so I bought a bike to mix up my training a bit. After the first ride I couldn't believe how much fun it was. Now I'm trying to learn something about the sport and I've improved a lot. My only goal is to ride. Period. However when I first started the computer said I was usually going 18 km per hour or so. Now it routinely says 26-28 km per hour or so. And here lately I've been pushing long stretches into the 30's.

It takes a lot of my inner personal strength to ride like that and I can't imagine being so good and so committed as to be the best in the world for 7 years straight. He's an inspiration.

You're looking in the right direction for motivation. God Bless.

  • neat set, John. Thanks for posting-I didn't have a clue these existed. How did hear of them, and how did you obtain yours?

What Lance accomplished was incredible. Its too bad that professional cycling is such a mess, and that his era was so tainted.

  • Griv,

I've asked PCGS for information on the Q&A page (for the American Heros series in general) and they haven't yet responded. Maybe they will with some exact figures.

I've seen some registry set pages that show low pops but I don't know if that means anything. I seem to recall seeing somewhere that he only signed a handful in the earlier years of the program. And the lions share in 2004 and 2005.

    I hope you're right.

  • SFDukie,

I found out about the series while researching the PCGS American Hero's series. I've been collecting mostly autographed collectibles related to coins here as of late.

I just did a google search on it and deep into the pages of results I found some guy who had a set for sale so I emailed him and asked if he still had it. He did, and I launched him some money.

Same here. I have one by General Franks, the 3 Jessica Lynch Eagles (2003 MS69, 2003 PR69 and 2004 MS69) as well as the Jessica Lynch "Women in Millitary" and "POW" 1994 Commemoratives. I tried for a Gerald Ford $50 but they are way up there. image
  • There's a Ford 86 eagle on ebay now they want $2500 for I think. I want the coin but that's a little steep.
