silk paper

I have some early revenue stamps that im going to sell. How can you tell if they have silk paper?

  • I don't have a clue. I hope somebody does.

  • Look for short silk 'threads' embedded in the paper. Easier to see on the back side.

  • What color are they? I do see some blue.
  • Is there a big visual difference between the "old paper" they list in the specialized catalogue and the "silk paper? This might be an easier way to for me to figure out what i have.. These were all in a book. Some where mounted as old paper and some as silk paper. I just want to make sure before i sell.. Thanks
  • No. You are looking for short pieces of 'threadlike' fibers embedded in the paper. They can be blue, but other colors also.

    A couple of things:

The silk paper used in the 1st Issue revenues tends not to have anywhere near the thread count one normally associates with granite papers. In many cases there may just be one or two fibres per stamp.

Be careful not to confuse a chunk of wood pulp for a silk fibre.

On the higher-value silk paper varieties, expertization is a necessity.
