UNA and the... EAGLE?

We've all heard of "Una and the Lion", right?

Well, what about "UNA and the EAGLE"?

Designer Daniel Carr, our own "dcarr" of numismatic fame and infamy, has created another UNA entirely.

UNA, as in "Union of North America"- another fantasy "Amero" pattern in gold. I must say, I rather like the design on this one.

I like this one, however with all the great amount of detail and depth in the hair-dress - the face looks a little flat? Perhaps it has also something to do with proportions. I'll run it past my girlfriend to get an artists' perspective, but definitely an improvement in the design over the last year's pieces, in my opinion.

The face does indeed look a bit flat, but don't forget you're lookin' at a digital mockup rather than the actual coin. It would be interesting to see one of these in hand.

    digital mockup?

have you ever seen one of his coins in hand? from the 3 ive had in-hand they're EXACTLY as the digital "mockups" appear, I assume he designs on his computer program and just sends this designs to the actual producer... that's one criticism of his personal productions that appear most valid, incredibly CG and not at all a sculpture.

personally, I dont care for the wings growing out of liberty's head. and the hoop earring is a bit odd imho.

Ugly ugly ugly.......... I respect the work that Dcarr has done but none of his coins have ever appealed to me. At one time, maybe...but every since I discovered the darkside and those beautiful 1800's coins from around the world...... no one else's work has even come close!

No, I haven't. And I agree that the CG aspect of the designs lacks flair when compared to more traditionally-engraved stuff (it all seems to be pretty low-relief, for one thing).

However, this IS the 21st century, and I'm sure CG is here to stay, for better and for worse. Comparing this to his other CG designs (apples to apples and oranges to oranges), I have to say I like it more than the other Amero patterns.

I'd still rather have Una and the Lion from Victoria's reign, naturally. image

I like it! While I can think of at least a dozen coins I would rather have over this one it is still a pretty cool looking piece! The perfect cheeks are my biggests turn on, not a single mark in sight! While I am not a big fan of modern stuff (let alone stuff with this price tag) it is appealing to me and wouldn't mind having one if the price were right (then again, I am also going through the YES!/oh crap I won syndrome)... image

Yes, I design them on the computer. But I use a 3-D digital sculpting program that I wrote myself. Instead of pushing physical clay around with my fingers and scraping away at plaster, I push digital clay around with my mouse and scrape away with digital chisels.

I do ALL the die engraving myself.

PS: I can make the relief to any height I want. Here is the same thing in extremely high relief (copper this time):

I definetly couldn't do it so my hat is off to you.... However, have you thought about trying to make a coin to have the same type of effects that the coins form the 1800's have.... Sorta rustic feeling?? That would be sweet.

I could certainly do that. Imperfections are actually very easy to sculpt with my system. I try not to have imperfections, though.
Here is one that may be close to the kind of look you are talking about:
