Have you ever cheered AND groaned simultaneously, upon winning a coin on eBay?

I just did.

Several days ago, knowing I had a little money to spend after I got a refund check from a sold-out coin purchase, I entered an esnipe bid on a Pupienus sestertius. You Roman coin folks know that Pupienus is a rare bird, like his equally ill-fated imperial colleague Balbinus. They ruled jointly for a very short time, from April 22 to July 29, in the "Year Of Six Emperors" (238 AD).

This particular Pupienus sestertius is not the best of them out there, but it is quite adequate.

It also happens to be a Wildwinds plate coin, and Example #1 on the Wildwinds page for that type.

The flan cracks probably detract from the value somewhat but at the risk of using what's becoming a cliché of mine, I find that they give the coin "character". With a clear name and a pretty nice portrait, the coin meets my standards just fine.

So when I saw tonight that I'd won it, I cheered.

The price is actually a pretty substantial savings against the other one I'd been looking at on VCoins. This one is admittedly not as nice as the other, but it is nice enough, and only a little over half the price of the one on VCoins. I'm pleased with it.

Then I realized that in momentarily forgetting my esnipe bid, I'd already spent the money I'd had when I programmed the bid, and now I have no idea how I am gonna pay for this coin.

That's where the groan comes in.

So now I am gonna have to scrape the bottom of the barrel to swing the purchase of this coin. Some of you deeper-pocket folk might laugh at my dilemma over a measly $330 coin, but I have no pretensions of grandeur- I'm an average lower-middle-class working guy. (Georgia "trailer trash", some might say).

I'll pull it off- somehow. I have ninety bucks coming via snailmail in the next few days from a small gold coin I sold my uncle, and I have a check coming from the antique mall for my December coin sales, but that might be pretty pitiful, since my stock there is really depleted and they deduct the rent from my monthly check. I have no idea how much juice is left on my credit card, but I would suspect not much, and I don't wanna go that route, anyway.

It's gonna be tight, but one way or another, I just bought this coin, and I am happy that I did.

I just gotta get busy with an "emergency sale" so I can inject some funds into PayPal, quickly, before my budget hemorrhages too badly!

Stay tuned for some nice Darkside stuff in the next couple of days. I was gonna put off selling anything until I caught up on my Liteside antique mall stock, but now the Darkside Weekly Swap stuff just moved to the forefront, since I need some funds fast.

On the lighter side, just think of the amusement I'll get when I show the coin to family and friends, and can walk up to them, saying, "Hey, wanna see my Pupienus?"

(The key to that particular joke is in the pronunciation. Unless I'm much mistaken, "Pupienus" is pronounced a lot like "poopy anus".)

Just imagine the looks I'll get, as people back away, cautiously (or flee in abject terror).

Probably something like the reception I got when I showed my (Caligula) As at work, and said to everyone, "Hey, I've got a nice As. Wanna see it?"

    Ha. I crack me up.

JRC- I ripped it off from smoebody.

    Garfield the cat, I believe.

PS- JZ: there's only one slab in the batch- a fairly modern USSR rouble in PCGS MS67, which I got fairly recently, right here.

A lot of the stuff I am imaging right now is from the 17th and 18th centuries, and a goodly chunk of it came from Dan (coinpictures). But there's a mixed bag. Some of the older stuff might (just maybe) find an appreciative audience in the German States enthusiasts. There are a couple of pieces, anyway.

Well, I paid for the Pupienus, thanks to a little help; an unsolicited loan from Roman ("TwoKopeiki"). It was very generous of him to buy me some time.

It just dawned on me that this will be the very first coin for my Roman set that I have purchased off eBay, which is surprising, considering how much I use eBay for my other collecting pursuits. I've stuck pretty much with VCoins and trusted forum members so far.

It's a testament to VCoins and Collectors Universe that I've managed to assemble over a hundred pieces in the collection without once buying off eBay until now.

I do indeed have an understanding boss, but it helps that I work graveyard shifts, when there are no bosses around. image

It also helps that I now have a relatively easy desk job in the department, answering phones. The phone doesn't ring much on the overnight shift, so once I have my little bit of paperwork done, the night is usually mine.

Nice and peaceful, the way I like it.

New Year's Eve got a bit crazy, though, as they usually do.
