The start of my Belgian Type Set...1876 Five Francs

Being half Belgian, I thought it appropiate that I start a type set of "Trade Dollar" sized coins.

Here's the start of that collection:

I'll be interested to see where you go with this. Belgian coins don't get as much respect as they deserve, I reckon.

Are you just doing the crown-sized pieces, or ALL the Belgian type coins?

I'm going to try and complete a type set of Crown size / Trade Dollar size 5 Francs.

I've already put together a small type set of gold in ICG holders...have Leopold II and Albert I
in MS 65. Sorry no images.

I'm not going to attempt to do a complete type set - plus, I don't own any reference books
on Belgian coins, so I don't want to go into this too blindly.

I may go for the modern gold commems - they are pretty interesting.

Lou, I'm first generation Belgian - I came here as a youngster, speaking Flemish -
and spoke no English until I was about five years old.

Do you at least have a Krause catalog? I'm unfamiliar with any Belgian-specific references, though there are bound to be some (just not in English). Krause is pretty much a must-have if you're gonna attempt this project, though.

    Cool Mike,

I'm second generation, my Mom came from Kessel, in the Flemish part of Belgium.

    Lou,

My mother's family came from the Antwerp area, Braschaat - and Burcht; my cousins all live in Kontich or Brugge and St Michel's by Brugge. I was there this Summer for ten days visiting family. Of course I had to
visit a childhood memory, the Zoo in downtown Antwerp, and then have Belgian Waffles on the Kaiserlai.

Doogy has a pretty nice NGC AU55 on the Weekly Swap, right now.

Speaking of Brugge, my maternal grandfather (Dr. Logan Robertson, from whom my first name derives) died there while on a trip in 1987. A day after the word reached us, Mom got a postcard from him, saying basically, "Having a great time- wish you were here".
