2 Reale to go along with the coutnerfeit 8 Reale

Not sure if this one is counterfeit or not. Not nearly as obvious as the first. This one looks good but something about it screams coutnerfeit. Weight on this one is around 6 grams (Once again using a hand held scale not digital). After reading about how much these coins are counterfeited I'm a bit worried that this one may be a bad one also. Although the finding of the counterfeit 8 reale has got me wanting to collect the counterfeits... Interesting items... Here are the pics of the 2 Reale.

Nothing screams counterfeit to me, them again, I am sure someone with way more knowledge than I will chime in with "that's the wrong ruler on the obverse" or something else real obvious any time now! If it is a fake, it looks like it circulated a while which would make it real counterfeit in my book (not a recent forgery to dupe modern collectors)! If you are interested in couterfeits I have a few image though I bought most (but not all) as counterfeits... I even found a counterfeit while MD'ing two years ago (2006). My pride and joy is a V nickel that is gold washed/plated... I love the looks of dealers at coin shows when I tell them I have a 5 dollar gold piece I want to sell. "I know it is a 5 dollar gold coin because of the big "V" on the back"! The looks I get are priceless!!! Even without a Visa or Mastercard!

Well in looking at other 2 Reales from that time it appears the the portrait on the obverse of this coin differs from the obverse on the coins from that time of Ferdind VII.... I can't find a 1810, which I think this is, but I can find a 1809 that has Ferdind VII on it and the portrait is WAY off...... image

  • Possibly from Guatemala. The 1810 2 reales has the bust of Charles IV and the legend FERDIND VII. Guatemala appears to be the only issuer to use this combination.

Mint-mark "NG" - Guatemala. It's Cayon #18044. Looks to be authentic, especially if properly edged and weighs around 6.2-6.7 grams.

It weighs right at 6 grams. I need to find my digital scale in order to get an accurate reading but this hand held one works rather well. Well.... I guess I'll put this in the collection as a "genuine" coin then! Thanks guys...
