What's your estimates on the true value of the 1909-O barber quarter

Could someone in the know on barber quarters tell me what they think the market value of no problem 1909-O quarters in AG, G, VG, F, and VF? There seems to be a lot of discrepancy between greysheet and what they bring.

Thanks,
-David

David, my PCGS F12 was won on Ebay in Nov. 2005 and I paid $228. A forum member here offered a PCGS F15 for $850 several months ago. I don't know if that one sold for the asking price or not.

    I don't collect quarters under AU 53, so I can't help you.
However, RichieURich - who posts here alot - also has a few
for sale - or at least he did a few weeks ago. Some had a
couple of problems, but quite a few were nice. He's your
best source for AG- VF at the moment, IMHO.

    There's a nice 09-O in PCGS AU 55 on eBay right now;
its Irv Reichel's coin [ its an EX: ANACS 55 coin ] and
he's asking the bidding to start at $1899.

Edited to add: This sold to a single bidder seconds before the auction ended. I guess he thought he snipped it. Nice coin though; I had an offer on it if it didn't sell.

I'll have another 09-O in an ANACS UNC Details / Net AU 50
with me at FUN. Its for sale. I'll refrain for mentioning an amount
as I don't want this to sound like a solicitation.

Good luck finding one of the most difficult dates in the series.

Edited to add: I sold my 1909-O quarter to Rich Ulrich at the FUN show. FYI.

Hypey-hypey. There are scads of these in VG, Fine and even VF. A nice VF should be $350. I consider the 08-s a tougher coin, probably tied for 4th in the set with the 97-s. The 09-o in AU is a conditional rarity. Pcgs has fine-12 at $98. Thats low for a really good one but they are out there.

That was a nice quarter I bought from MFH at the FUN show. And it didn't come home with me, it was sold at the show.

...as I knew it would sell at the FUN show.

Yes it was a very nice coin. Glad some one else had a chance to add it to their collection.
They are incredibly difficult to locate like that. It took me almost two years to land one and
that was with some one looking for me at every major coin show in the country !!

    Thanks again, Rich.

What would you guys grade this one? Surfaces/rims have no defects. Recommend submission to PCGS? I've owned it for 12 yrs now... been sitting in a flip ever since.

    thanks,

From what I've seen, the 1909-o in the lowest grades is fairly common. But as you work up the grading scale things get tough real fast. A VF+ specimen should attract a sizeable market demanding a pretty decent price. Moving up to XF (that's the one I need badly) is difficult at best to locate. Unfortunately for me, the XF market price has been excessively pricey as of the last year.

I don't collect grades higher than XF/AU, so I can't provide any input here.

    C'dude, I'd say you're 1909-o is a solid F-12.

C'dude, I agree with the F-12 grade. If it's a no problem coin, it's probably worth submitting it to PCGS. Or sell it to a dealer who likes to buy these for his inventory. image

It's a quirky date imo. I passed on so many MS63's to 65's of this date in the 1980's it was not funny. Rather, I put my money on dates I felt where far tougher in gem: 98-s, 98-0, 99-s, 99-0, 00-0, 01-0, 07-s, for example. To think that an AU of this date is worth more than Mint State coins boggles the mind. One might as well take that MS63 and carry it as a pocket piece until it gets to be an AU-55. $2000 for an AU? Get real! Next thing you know some guy will be trading his MS65 for an XF!

I liken it to say an 1866 where lower grade circs are very rare, but their prices should always be contained by mint state pieces which are sort of available...not to mention the several hundred proofs that were minted.

No worries, an 09-o and an 01-o are sisters.
What does it say on the holder? It's a very tough date. An MS63 books at 2K, however AU 58 would bring about 750. Great toning.

It make you wonder where the Grey Sheet gets its prices for some coins. You know there are no AU '09-O's quarters selling in $400 range, not on this planet anyway. Same with the 04-S half$, and the 1846 dime, and many others.

It's not holdered..I have it in a 2x2 plastic. It was a metal detector find, and was sandwiched between two other coins....I guess that accounts for the very little environmental damage.

All I can say is that JJ Teaparty has had a PCGS G6 1909-O for sale for a looooooooooong time. They're asking $199
Positive BST transactions with: too many names to list! 36 at last count.

It was eventually sold on ebay for less than half the original asking price as I recall.

Some of you guys are on crack! IMO, way undervalued in Fine-XF.

OK, I’m knee deep in the Barber quarter world when it comes to VF material. In an original, unmolested state, the 09-O in VF is very tough.

Note that I’m not saying a VF20-VF30 PCGS, NGC or ANACS example can’t be found, but the examples I’m seen have all been cleaned --- every last one I’ve ever seen. Because of the difficulty of this date/mm, PCGS and the other TPGs seem to often ‘looks the other’ way when it comes to ‘issues’.

Point me to an original example online somewhere, PLEASE!!!!

    Mike,

My heart sank when I read that you sold it. I read further down the thread that it must have been a different one. Phew!! image

I still love that coin. Very wholesome and unmessed with. Please let me know if you sell it!

    John
