So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

I wouldnt be 100% sure on any one player being "Clean". The people named in the Mitchell report are basically players named in the "investigation" of just a few people and some of the people from the Balco case. Though it may never come out, there is a big possibility that the names from the Mitchell report are only the tip of the iceberg. I wouldnt be surprised to see a number in the neighborhood of 5 times the players named in the report to have actually used steroids. Of course, MLB and the players association have put forth this report to show their willingness to end steroids, but in all honesty, they do not want all the names to come out.

The very first week Romo took over for Bledsoe last year I bought one each of both his SP Authentic and Contenders rookies. I have almost sold them both several times but still have them hoping that the Cowboys will make the championship. The Contenders is now in a PSA 10 holder and the last sale for such a card was over $600. At random points you can pick up these two Romo rookies for just under $400.....then when he has a good game they go back up and vice versa. 36 TD passes this year + 4,000 yards makes for a decent investment. I sure wish I would have bought Brady rookies several years ago...

Pudge was specifically outed by Canseco as a steroid user. Don't call him clean.

Right now, Andrew Bynum (autographs and/or #ed rookies) is a fantastic investment. Being the 20-year old starting center for one of sports' marquee teams and averaging a double-double will do that for you.

Guys whose playing time has just gone up dramatically, in any sport, make good investments.

I do not think any modern card has great long term upside. It is always supply and demand that dictates price. New cards not only have volume, they are all basically Mint condition. Where's the scarcity? Add to that the issue of multiple card companies and issues and you just have too many cards to invest in. In many cases there isn't even agreement as to which card is the true rookie card.

On top of all this, there is the time issue - what you see today is speculation often based on one or two good years at the beginning of a career, maybe even based on minor league performance. Sell the cards after a great year. Cash out when you can. To truly invest would mean a 15-20 year career then a 5 year waiting period for HOF. Are you willing to wait that long? It's really not a buy and hold market - its buy and sell.

  • << <i>Ill mention two guys who aren't signing cards anymore...Tiger Woods and Ichiro. There few RC autos can only go up as neither looks like they
    are going to slow down.

I also believe the classic on-card auto sets will eventually have big spikes, once the manufacturers go almost exclusively to sticker.

  • So it looks like the general concensus is new rookies.

That's a lot like the stock market. The player can turn out to be amazing or terrible....

I guess I'm looking for someone who's already somewhat established. Dont get me wrong, I love Dice-K, Ellsbury, etc but they really havent proven anything yet.

I guess I'm looking for a future HOF'er (who has already established themselves.

There have been some great suggestions though, keep em coming.

    And thank you.

I totally agree with the on card autograph thought.
  • Stay away from pitchers or flip them in their first year and dont look back...

yes, and like the stock market, there is a good time and bad time to sell.....sell when they are in the news and doing great, buy on a slump year, but believe they have many more good years ahead....or buy before they are known...
