Ebay auction from Canadian buyer question

Please let me know what you think about my solution to a "problem" I am having.

I took advantage of the 10 cent listing promotion and started 30 auctions. All ended last night.

In all my auction listing I ship to United States only. The last 2 that I shipped to Canada somehow never made it to the destination.image

So when I am sending out invoices I see a buyer is from Canada. Guess he's from the part of Canada that never learned to comprehend English.

So I send the invoice and tell him I will only sell to him if he mails me US funds and once they leave my hands I cannot be responsible for the mail. I also tell him no using paypal as I have no was to track.

I also give him the option of using Global Priority which will cost him more but with the same rules as above.

If he doesn't agree I will sell on 2nd chances leave him a negative for not being able to read and if he does I will send them USPS international or the shipping he chooses.

If I do leave negative I fully welcome the retalitory feedback I will get.

Is there any other way to handle this? Just cancel his invoice now and offer to 2nd chance offers?

Opinions?

Thanks,

Jon

  • to prevent folks from Canada from bidding you should set your selling preferences to only allow bidders from certain countries.

I have shipped to Canada a few times, but reluctantly, fortunately everything got there safely.

Yup, what the Boba dude said.
I used to have that problem. You're always going to
get those that don't read the entire description. I only
ship to U.S. & Canada. My preference has both countries checked.
If someone from Germany tries to bid, they're automatically declined.

As for leaving him a neg, it may be a bit harsh. It could of been an honest mistake that he missed it. If he doesn't comply to your demands to resolve it, then go ahead and offer a second chance notice to the under bidder.

Being one of those Canadian's that like Ebay and Baseball cards I have relied heavily on selllers in the United States to sell to me. I know a lot of people don't liek to sell to us but I also feel that by not selling to us you are cutting off a lot of $$$. When ever I see an auction that says United States only I always email them first to ask if I may bid and if I can pay with my Confirmed Paypal address.

I also add that I will gladly pay extra for shipping so that the seller is able to track and cover themselves with Paypal. I understand the frustration of some like yourself but give them the benefit of the doubt and try communicating with them first. Most would gladly pay for Global shipping with tracking if it is an item they really want. Also take into account their feedback rating.

  • I dont think Canucks are crooks :0) Heck, I'm french-Canadian, I just don't like the rigamarole with the shipping, customs, the no tracking. I agree that global priority is the way to go. I love Canada! the people are damn friendly and the country is gorgeous.

Agreed. I had 20-30 total auction that were great to Canada. Too bad I had 2 in a row that were not.

I hope it all works out in the end.

Also I have had Canadian buyers e-mail me before bidding and if they seem solit I will sell to them and take a chance.

I will look into my preferences to see if I can block all non US bidders.

    Thanks all.

  • You should not expect people to rely on your listing verbage. If you do not want to sell to Canada, then change your settings accordingly. They will not be able to bid. If I read every detail of the listings I bid on, I would never get through them all. If someone does not want to sell to my country, then I expect them to change their settings accordingly.

In reference to your comment about lost mail to Canada. I can fully relate. Ever since 9/11, I have seem more of my International shipments dissapear into the ozone, including Canada. I finally stopped shipping outside of the US on coins, and restricted cards to only the US and Canada. Always make sure you fill out the customs card. Global priority mail is the best way to go, hopefully the value of the shipment is worth the cost.

Not sure why you will not take PayPal. It is often the easiest and best form of payment for International buyers. But that is your choice. However, if you said Paypal is ok on the listing, and did not change your settings to prevent International bidding, then I would probably accept it on this deal.

As far as negative ratings go. If you have a bunch of positives to offset the neg, then I guess that is OK. If you are a fairly new seller (less than 100 rating), don't take a negative lightly. This is probably a deal that will go smoothly, do not make it more complicated than it is. Certainly not worth a negative feedback, if it can be avoided. The negative will only make you appear difficult to work with. Just my thoughts.

Most important, let him know shipments between Canada and US are very slow these days. I have been buying cards from a guy in Toronto ebay name: Texasholdem. I always get my cards, but it definately takes a week longer than the items I buy in the US.

Idid not stop shipping coins because I thought the Canadians were crooks. Quite the opposite. I had lots of great canadian and European customers that were all honest. My shipping losses only started to get out of hand after customs tightened up after 9/11. I do not know if the lost shipments happenned before the coins left the US or after. All I know is my lost shipments went from about 1% to 10%. I doubt very much it was my customers that suddenly became dishonest. I think it happenned while in customs. Who knows. All I know is I had to restrict my shipments. However, as I said earlier, I have been buying frequently from Canada lately with no problems. It may be time to test the waters again.

Although I may have a different opinion once I get burned, I sell worldwide. I have sold multiple sales to the UK, Germany, Portugal, Japan, Taiwan, and Australia and as of today, I have yet to have one not get there. I think the amount of the auction would come into play ins ome instances, even though I just sent a $60 book card to the UK a few weeks ago. I usually put in my auctions, NO INT'L PAYPAL, but I still get foreigners who bid and pay with paypal. If its a high dollar item, I usually tell them I dont accept paypal outside the US "As stated in the auction" and give them the chance to send a int'l MO. If its low dollar, I figure its worth the risk.
