There are known fakes of that design, as I learned the hardway.

It rings like silver .. I guess these are around $2500.00. How can I tell for sure if it is real or fake .. I have had this for over 20 years.

Unfortunately, this date among other 20th century Italian are counterfeited. Instead of offering my thoughts, just get the coin authenticated...

    start by weighing the coin

Sorry, was just looking at the edge and the overall look. I checked coinarchives and it looks much more authentic now image Again, not familiar with the series, so I would suggest sending it to NCS for authentication.

Like the guys have said, it's a coin known for counterfeits. I don't have my Krause handy to look up the appropriate weight--and I don't know enough about the particulars of the counterfeits to know the diagnostics. In such a vacuum I think NCS is a good idea...and if it's just for authentication I would have said ANACS or ICG, but at the moment I'm not sure who is who or where the whoever may be found (yes, I've been reading the liteside soap operas again). It would be great if it's real! I love the design.

Ouch 4 grams is outside the acceptable weight/wear ratio for a real coin I think. image
