What a waste of resources for the mint...
scene from one of their books on the reverse....might actually get people interested in reading the books...
that coin actually hurts my eyes
I've never heard anyone complain about the looks or even that they are 1 dollar coins
maybe from a numismatic point of view - possible
Pretty, no.

oh i don't know about that, i think suzy b trumps the prezzies!

The Mint could package the coins with limited edition Comic Books and DVD's and literally make a mint on them. Think of the collector demand!
I've noticed the same thing. As recently as a few hours ago, I unwrapped one I had stashed from my travels. Toning had a nice quality about it.
Didn't care much for suzy b's either until one came my way with a nice patina on it.

Actually, the mint turns a fair profit on these.... and it return to the Treasury reducing the tax burden or defecit.
<< <i>The Mint should just get it over with and put our favorite cartoon characters on our dollar coins. >>
I guess you mean Congress should pass Legislation requiring the Mint to do so. They produce these dollar coins per the Law, not becuase someone at the Mint says let's do it.
Am I showing my age by using the word "engravers?"
But I do think that portrait of Van Buren is very well-crafted.

They no longer look like U.S. Postage stamps. They
now have Mickey Mouse, insects, dogs, flowers ect on them.
I am afraid that our coinage is slowly moving in the same direction.
Our coinage of today has no character, no beauty of design and is
a disgrace to be considered coins of the Republic.

2009 is just around the corner, your wish will be reality!!!!
How many handsome presidents have we had?
They're cool, and I like 'em.
Miss Sac is prettier, from an aesthetic standpoint, but these are pretty interesting and fun, for moderns. I like the return of a lettered edge to US coins.
That's the first since, what, the Capped Bust halves?
Give credit where credit is due. I doubt there is ANY coin in US history (Saint-Gaudens included) that EVERYBODY likes, from a design standpoint.
We're all critics. That's both good and bad, I guess.
