I posted my collecting goals here for 2008; now that's it's almost over, see how I did.

Okay, as the rest of this congregation no doubt knows, I'm a complete set collector, and I like to do complete runs of the following sets. With this topic we each make a list of what our collecting goals for 2008 are, and then we see how many we complete before the end of the year. When you complete one part, you can make some kind of distinctive mark and the date when it was finished (all these are baseball complete set runs unless otherwise stated (currently is as of 1/1/08):

I have now updated this list to show how much progress I've made at the end of this year.

Topps Baseball: Started 2008 with 1976-2004, Traded 1981, 1983-93
My goal is to extend this run to 1974-2008, and complete the Traded run up to 1995. I also need to upgrade my 1976 and 1979 sets also.
UPDATE (12/30): I now have all sets from 1974-2007 and have all Traded sets up to 1995 except for 1982, but still need the graded cards below to truely finish. I've also started collecting 1971-73 PSA 7 key cards and I HOPE to have all of 1971-79 finished (at least the graded card part) by the end of 2009.

Topps Football: Started with 1983-91
My goal is to extend this run to 1980-99. Bonus points if I can go up to 2008.
UPDATE (12/30): I now have every set from 1980-2000 except for the Joe Montana RC (which I want in PSA 8)

Fleer: Started with 1981-95, Update 1985-95
My goal is to upgrade the 1981 and 1994 sets to completely finish this run. Bonus points if I can extend this run to 1999 or manage to get the 1984 Fleer Update set (probably w/o Clemens/Puckett though).
UPDATE (12/30): Own all Fleer sets 1981-95 and all Update sets 1985-95 but still would like at some point to get 1984 Fleer Update set with Roger/Kirby in PSA 8.

Donruss: Started with 1981-95, and ALL Highlights/Rookies/Traded sets
My goal is to extend this run to 1998. Bonus points if I can collect all the remaining puzzles (I have the 1982-91 Donruss ones)
UPDATE (12/30): All I need now is the 1997 set and one common from the 1998 set.

Score: Started with 1981-95, all Update sets except 1994
My goal is to extend this run to 1998 and get the last Update set. Bonus points if I can manage to get the Gold Rush sets from 1994-95.
UPDATE (12/30): All I need now is 1997 and 1998. I also got the 1994 Gold Rush set and 1995 PLATINUM set (which was easily my biggest purchase of the year)

Upper Deck: Started with 1989-93
My goal is to extend this run but I'm not sure how far. I won't settle for any less than Electric Diamond sets for 1994-95, though.
UPDATE (12/30): No progress. Still would like that 1993 Upper Deck Gold set, preferably without Jeter for now.

Ultra: Started with 1991-95
My goal is to extend the Gold Medallion set run (I only have the 1995 set) up to at least 1999. Bonus points if I can get up to present.
UPDATE (12/30): No progress. It is TOUGH to find those sets!!

Finest: Started with have 1993-97
My goal is to get all non-Refractor Finest sets from 1993-97. I'll need the 1993-94 Jumbo sets, the two 1995 insert sets, the three missing singles from the 1996 silver set, the 1997 silver set. I also want to get the 1996-2000 Mantle/Mays/Clemente/Ryan/Aaron Finest insert sets. Bonus points if I can also get the 1996-97 gold sets.
UPDATE (12/30): I did get the 1993 Jumbo All-Stars set and the Mantle/Mays Finest cards, but no progess otherwise.

Flair: Started with 1993 set only
My goal is to get 1993-95, with all insert sets too. I did get 1994's Infield Power and Hot Numbers from my 2007 Secret Santa, so I'm off to a good start there. image
UPDATE (12/30): Got the 1994 set w/o A-Rod as well as 1995. I also managed to pick up the 1994 Hot Gloves set and half of the Wave of the Future set (the series with A-Rod).

1986-95 Fleer and Ultra inserts:
All I'm missing to complete this collection is 1990 League Standouts, Soaring Stars, World Series; 1991's Factory set Pro-Visions, all 1993 Fleer insert sets, and 1995 Update's Soaring Stars. For 1994 Ultra, I need Home Run Kings, On-Base Leaders, Rising Stars, and RBI Kings. For 1995 Ultra, I need All-Rookies, Golden Prospects, Hitting Machines, Home Run Kings, On-Base Leaders, RBI Kings, Rising Stars, and Second Year Standouts.
UPDATE (12/30): No progress.

Other Insert Projects:
All I need to complete my Topps Glossy Send-In/All-Stars/Rookies run is the 1984, 1986, and 1990 Send-In Sets. I also want to extend my Diamond Kings set run (1982-92) to at least 1995, and I also want to do a complete 1986-92 1000 Yard Club set run for Topps football.
UPDATE (12/30):: No progress.

New set projects started this year:
* 1991-95 Leaf sets with 1992 Leaf Black Gold set; still missing 1990 Leaf
* 1990-93 Bowman sets; missing two commons from 1992 Bowman and Jeter from 1993 Bowman because of krukcards' sloppy service. image
* 1993-95 SP sets w/ 1995 as silver version; still need 1994 SP die-cut set
* 1988-90 Fleer b-ball sets with graded Jordans in 1988 and 1989. Would like to get 1987 and MAYBE 1986 as well.

Beckett Baseball Card Monthly magazine run: Currently have 1988-96
My goal is to get up to 1987-99 for baseball; still missing Jan 1989, Oct 1991, Apr 1992 as well. Bonus points if I can get a nice Beckett football magazine run up to 1999 or so.
UPDATE (12/30): Got the three missing issues, so now I have a complete Beckett baseball run from 1988-96. Would love to perhaps do a Beckett Football and maybe even Beckett Basketball run from the early-to-mid 1990s also. Also a nice run of the Baseball Cards Magazine from the mid 1980s to early 1990s would be sweet also.

So, you think I made pretty good progess in 2008? I hope so, because I'm sure going to hit the ground running on those graded cards for 2009! image

  • I recently sat down and considered where I was going with my cards. I came up with a new plan of attack on the sets that I want to finish:

#1- complete my Topps Heritage collection. I'm only missing about 250 cards to finish the 2001, 2003-2005 sets, and that will complete the run from 2001-2007.
#2- Build the 2008 Topps Heritage set.
#3- I've been grabbing up the sets I need to fill in my 1980-2007 run, but I need a few here and there. Rather than this 'sporadic' buying, I'll grab the sets I need that end on the 'year' at hand. 2008= 2008, 1998, 1988 (have), 1978, etc., as far back as money allows. If I find the others I'm looking for at an incredible price, I'll grab it, but my main goal will be the '8' year sets.

    2001-2014 Topps Heritage complete!
  • I'd like to add several new PSA 10s to my 1993 Refractor sets from personal submissions.

P.S. Very ambitious goals, estil. Best of luck to you.

Estil, Good luck on your goals. My goal every year is simple. Stay one step ahead of going bankrupt.

  • Goals for this year is as follows...

1.) Continue to upgrade my Steve Carlton Topps Run

2.) Complete my Richie Ashburn Run (need to buy the Rookie Card which will be a big purchase)

3.) Continue collecting the 1970 Topps Basketball in PSA 6 or better, trying to get to 25% complete by end of the year.

4.) Get back into TTM autographs. I am focusing on Philadelphia Athletes and NBA Players to start (easier to get sigs from the older guys).

5.) NBA 50 Greatest Player Autographs on Card. This ties in with my renewed TTM autograph collecting. Alot of the guys just do not sign so I will be forced to buy inserts along the way. For guys like Wilt, Russell, and Jordan I am just going to have to bite the bullet and pay $200-300 for a certified auto of some sort. Fortunately I do have a Bird, Olajuwon, and Barkley, and Gervin from the early 90s.

  • Wow! Ambitious goals for you guys! Good luck! I'm just trying to get back into the swing of things collecting wise. I'm hoping to obtain at least 30 Braves TTM sigs this year, as well as some Charlotte Hornets ones. Also continuing my Dale Murphy collection (which isn't very large at all right now). And then just picking up some packs here and there for fun.
Atlanta Braves, Charlotte Hornets, Shawn Kemp, Dale Murphy, and Bobby Engram.

    1. Finish off my 86-87 Fleer sets- I have one set finished, one missing a few commons and one missing about 30 cards. Then I will decide if I build more sets with all the extras I have or if I sell off the extras in a lot.

    2. Finish my second set of 96-97 Topps Chrome basketball, I only need a few commons but they are hard to find.

    3. Get a PSA 1/2 Mantle 51 Bowman that looks nice. Maybe one with a hidden crease or minor paper loss on the back.

    4. Sell off about 250,000 extra cards I have piled up all over the place.

    5. Get to the point all of my cards will stack in one corner.

I am sure I have more, but thats just off the top of my head haha.

  • My main goal was to get to a point in my collection where I do not owe anything by the end of 2007. Unfortunately, I made some late purchases that made it impossible. However, after selling some stuff I may be able to accomplish that goal within a month or two with some hard work.

I missed most of my goals last year, but did reach some.

Here are my goals for this year: end-of-year updates are in italics

Reach 70% on my Baseball HOF Player set, 65% on my Baseball HOF Manager set, 60% on my Football HOF Player/Coach/Admin set, 50% on my Baseball HOF Complete set, 40% on my Basketball HOF Player set, and 25% on my Hockey HOF Player set. I didn't get any of them, although I did get fairly close on Baseball HOF Player and Football HOF Player/Coach/Admin.

Reach 85% on at least one registry set, and 50% on at least 3 others. I reached 85% on my '72 Kellogg's All-Time Greats set (not too hard - it's a 15-card set).
Take at least 2 more of my '50s registry sets over 10%, and another 3 more over 5%. Yes. 5 went over 10%, and 3 more over 5%.
Take at least 3 more of my '60s registry sets over 10%, and another 4 more over 5%. Yes. 10 went over 10%, and 7 more over 5%.
Take at least 5 more of my '70s registry sets over 10%, and another 6 more over 5%. Yes. 7 went over 10%, and 11 more over 5%.
Take at least 3 more of my '80s registry sets over 10%, and another 5 more over 5%. Not quite. 6 went over 10%, but no others over 5%.
Take at least 3 more of my player registry sets over 33 1/3%, and 6 more of my player sets over 10%. No. 1 went over 33 1/3%, and 7 more over 10%.
Acquire at least 20 type cards from vintage sets I don't have any of (any sport) - including adding a card from each of the Topps Venezuelan sets I don't have (1959, 1962, 1967, 1977). Close, but no cigar. I got the 20 type cards part done in early January, mainly due to a catalog auction lot, and continued to add a lot more throughout the year - close to 50 different type cards in all, but I only got 3 of the 4 Venezuelan sets - 1962, 1967, and 1977.
Acquire playing-days cards of at least 5 HOFers who I don't already have cards of (any sport). No. I only got 3 - Ted Lyons, Red Faber, and Clark Griffith.
Pull a GU card of a HOFer (any sport) from a pack. No. I hardly did any pack-busting this past year.
Pull an auto card of a HOFer (any sport) from a pack. No. I hardly did any pack-busting this past year.
Acquire at least 5 GU or auto cards of HOFers who I don't already have GU or auto cards of. Yes. I got 6 - Ted Hendricks jersey, Don Maynard jersey, Walt Bellamy auto, Chuck Bednarik auto, Merlin Olsen auto , Al MacInnis jersey.
Acquire at least 5 vintage autographs of HOFers. No. I got only a Ralph Kiner vintage signature.
Acquire at least 1 HOFer apiece from T-206, '33 Goudey, and '52 Topps. No. I got only a '33 Goudey Red Faber.
Reach 40% on my '36 Goudey, '54 Topps and '54 Bowman Basic (BB) registry sets. No. No progress on the Goudey at all, and the Topps and Bowman fell well short of goal.
Reach 33 1/3% on my '40 Play Ball registry set. No. Hardly any progress on this set.
Reach 25% on my R423 registry set. No. I added a few to this set, but there were really only 2 occasions where significant numbers of these cards came up on eBay, and I didn't win that many of them.
Add 5% on at least 4 of my Upper Deck MVP gold parallel sets. No, although I wasn't that far off. I added 5% on '00 FB, and fell 2 cards short of 5% on '02 FB, '99 BB, and '00 BB.
Add at least 75 Jerry Porter serial numbered rookies or rookie parallels. Yes. 126.
Add at least 20 Jerry Porter autographed cards and 15 Jerry Porter game-used cards. I missed it about as narrowly as it's possible to - I added 29 autographs and 14 game-used cards (although most of them were really event-used materials), with another game-used card paid for but not yet received.
Add 1 item of game-used equipment from a HOFer (any sport). No.
Add 10% to the completion percentage on at least 5 of my vintage sets and 5% to the completion percentage on at least 20 more of my vintage sets (any sport). Yes. By my last count, I added 10% to the completion percentage on 8 sets and 5% to the completion percentage on 17 more sets.

Allen, great goal! I got a '51 Bowman Mick last year in lower grade and love it. My goal this year, not all that far off: get a nice '51 Bowman Mays to match. Probably will try and do so after tax season comes and goes.

I've been slacking off on my goals....I haven't done much of anything in cards this year.

I'm still semi in shock that this is mid 2008....the last 5-7 years seem like about 9 months.

I've got probably 70% of what I'll ever want from 78 to 92/93.

I might want to get more basketball, I really enjoyed the playoffs this year. Maybe some key celtics rookies. A box of '96 Topps Chrome basketball to put away?

Another goal are the 92/93 basketball subsets....the ones that were too rare and expensive to buy in 92/93. You still don't see very often. Total D, Hoops All Magic, Beam Team.

I got the Team Leader set a few years ago (still somewhat rare to see). Thats one of my favorite 90's sets to look through.

1980's OPC hockey is another goal. That jumps out at me most. My biggest 80's goal is probably a mint box of 80/81 OPC or 79/80 OPC to put away. I'd rather have the boxes than a handful of Mint 9 Messiers or Gretkzy rookies.

The decade has gone by so fast, it didn't even get a name. Wasn't it suppose to be the 00's or zero's?

It seems like it should be about 2001 or 2002. Someone has been speeding up the clock.

I just call it "the two thousands". And 2010 is "twenty ten", not "two thousand ten". I think the 1910s were called "the teens" but then that would leave out 2010-2012.

Well guys, we're now approaching the end of 2008 so I thought I'd bump this topic I made starting at the beginning of the year so you all can see how I did this year. I most likely will make a new one for 2009 of course. I'd say the top three things I'm most proud of getting are:

    1. 1995 Score Platinum set; no more than 4950 of each card exist and I may very well have the only complete set in the whole world! image
    2. 1993 Finest Jumbo set; no more than 1455 of each card exist but surely there are more complete sets out there seeing as how there's only 33.
    3. 1971 Topps; I started out with ZERO PSA 7 cards from this set and now I'm about halfway towards completing all the HOFers and checklists in PSA 7. On a related note, I now have about a dozen 1972 PSA 7 cards as well.
