1979-S SBA, great depth on obverse, normal?

I picked this up at the grocery store. I never noticed the depth of the face before. The second picture shows it best. It has incredible luster. Is this normal for pocket change today. Is there a cam version of the SBA for a business strike? I know there is one for a proof. Also the field at 3:00 isn't really noticed to the eye.

It's normal. AU/UNC SBAs like the one you have are fairly easy to locate from banks, etc. The closest thing to a cameo SBA is NGC's PL designation, but PCGS will not designate business strikes as PLs.

To be honest, I do not see evidence of prooflike or cameo in your coin.

Reliefs didn't really start looking pretty low until the mid-90's. They came down
in a long series of steps but it wasn't noticeable to most people even if they were
paying attention. Not every step was downward.

It's hadr to tell now since the older quarters have become so thin but they were
not much different than the silver. (except in execution)

It's difficult to find a clean MS/PF SBA, as even the mint delivers these coins with dings on them. Happy hunting.
