1887 VAM-1A Donkey Tail Cherrypick (and a good story,too!)

cmerlo1cmerlo1 Posts: 7,919 ✭✭✭✭✭
Many of you read my post the day ANACS was sold and everyone was let go...my friend, who was the source for the info, decide to hit the local B&M after he was let go...he picked up this coin for $22.00...He brought it by today and we confirmed it was a donkey tail!

Anyway, 3 questions:

What do you think it grades?

Would it BB at PCGS (he's considering submitting it)

What's it worth?

Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Great find. My feelings are that the coin has been cleaned, probably high XF-Low AU details.

AU, Donkey Tails are always weakly struck. Looks messed with though, perfect coin for old ANACS....

    1 AU 50
2 BB at PCGS. ANACS details
    3 No idea

For that money though cant go wrong. Very nice pickup.
I'll see your bunny with a pancake on his head and raise you a Siamese cat with a miniature pumpkin on his head.

You wouldn't believe how long it took to get him to sit still for this.

Looks AU53/55 to me. In a PCGS holder my guess is it would go for $750-$1000. The two PCGS AU50s I have record of sold for $585; I have no PCGS records in higher grades.

Edited to add: It's too tough of a coin in too high of a grade to not at least try to get into a holder.
    When in doubt, don't.

AU53. Worth a shot at PCGS. I don't see anything that screams "body bag" to me. Your friend Sucks™, BTW.

I will pass that along! I got to tell him that in person, especially since he got it at the B&M I cherrypick my VAMs from... in hand, the coin doesn't look cleaned to me, and has good luster. I feel priveleged to have seen one this nice! I find it rather poetic, considering what had happened to him earlier that day...

  • AU55, shot 58. No reason for a BB that I can see.

  • It will slab, and it will come back AU58. The strike is weak, because the die was breaking - - there is no wear, just slight friction.
