The 71-D is a cool variety that PCGS should attribute.
Ike Specialist
Finest Toned Ike I've Ever Seen, been looking since 1986
a handy naked-eye asymmetric T and Y of LIBERTY where the left side of the letter is much thinner
than the right. It is also a DDO, but most people can't see that without the aid of a loop or scope.
They are tougher to find that a 72-P Type 2 (at least for me) and PCGS is finally giving them the attribution
they deserve....FINALLY, another DIVA (Designated Ike Variety) comes to town!
However,....there is another even scarcer, one die variety in the business strike 71-S Ikes! It is featured in the
Peg Leg article of the Jan. Numismatist along with the 71-S FPL and is called the SPL (Straight Peg Leg).
The left leg of the R is straight, and it also has a distinct naked eye identifier...the T in LIBERTY is asymmetrical like
the (FPL) but the Y is totally normal. The main difference here, is that the obverse is NOT doubled but the reverse IS!
All specimens show dramatic doubling on the two L's of DOLLAR, some of the stars and the C in AMERICA.
We estimate the new 71-S FPL Ike DIVA to have about twice the population of the 71-S SPL. Hopefully, one day soon,
a new 71-S Peg Leg Ike DIVA will grace the dance floor of the Ike Variety Registry Set. Although, I don't know
how graceful of a dancer a Peg Leg DIVA can be!

P.S. I also agree with James that the 71-D FEP (Friendly Eagle Pattern) or as some call it, FEV (Friendly Eagle Variety)
should be designated as well. It has a reverse unlike ANY other Ike with many differences. First discovered many
years ago, it was designated by Dr. Wiles as the RDV-006. It too, is a naked-eye Variety once you know what to look for.
Being a naked-eye variety is important to PCGS designating deciding to designate them (along with input from Ike collectors
wishing to expand the Ike Registry Variety Set).
I Love Variety & Error Ikes!
Edited to add P.S.
