    For MS 1953.
    Many happy BST transactions
  • What do you mean for ms 1953
    B. I.
  • 1953-S with FBL.

  • << <i>What do you mean for ms 1953 >>

What he means is that the key in the Franklins is the non proof 1953 franklin

    FBL mean Full Bell Lines
    RACC
I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom I provide, then question the manner in which I provide it. I prefer you said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand to post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to!
  • So we have the 1953 MS FBL and the 1953 S FBL are they the only keys

Steamer, this should be of help...........

    CoinFacts
  • They keys depend upon what grade you are collecting.
    If it's 60, 1949-S
    If it's 65, 1949-D
    If it's 65FBL, 1953-S.
    etc.

I don't collect the proofs, and I don't know of anyone that makes a proof-only album.

When putting together a set of Franklins, you have to decide which you are going to collect, the business strikes or the proofs. Of course you can collect both, but my own preference is the business strikes. Next you have to consider whether you want to collect FBL examples, or no- FBL examples, and what grade you want to concentrate on. There are some dates which come nice, and there are a lot of FBL examples, some that come nice but FBL examples are very tough, and other dates that are very tough in nice condition, and even tougher in FBL. Another consideration is whether you want to put a toned set together, or a brilliant set. There were many from '49 through the late 50's that were taken out of original US mint sets, which have wonderful toning, these examples, even the '58_d which is perhaps the single date which comes with spectacular toning the most often, always command a significant premium. Perception has changed over the years regarding which dates are the toughest, for example the '49-S many years ago was considered the key to the set in gem FBL, however this is no longer the case as many overlooked later dates in the '60's have come to be recognised as much tougher than previously believed, like the '62-D. In FBL 65, the king is the '53-S, followed by the '62 Philly, '61, '52-S, '49-D, '63...'53 Philly and '50-D are also tough. I'm sure I've omitted a few, but this gives you a general idea. In '66, with or without FBL the '49-D, '51-D, '50-D, '53-D, and all the late dates with the exception of the '63-D (59-D thru '63). There was a thread on here in the past before I came and perhaps someone can provide you with the link, of a gentleman who did a very good job of breaking it down.

These days, Mint State and Proofs are generally not mixed in a set.

What grade are you looking at. What is "key" depends on the grade. For example, the '53-S in FBL (Full Bell Lines) is the key compared to any other MS date in the same grade- nothing else is even remotely close. Yet in non-FBL, a '53-S is relatively common in MS65.
