Hats off to SAINT in World Series of arbitrage

A clean sweep deserves some respect!! Personally finished top 10, just won't say where.

He definitely knew how to play the game - scour the auctions for upcoming rarities and buy them up. Then, after a new record price was set and the priceguide got updated, sell them off and begin again.

To make the contest more meaningful, they should limit the window for trading, perhaps for only one week at the beginning of each quarter.

In the hope of increasing my post count with nothing of real value, I've decided this thread would be a great place to be at the moment.

Unfortunately the "guess the PCGS price guide" game is not the real world. Would be much more instructive to see who made the most real % money this year based on their trading/investment/collecting activities. I know one former top Registry set guy that certainly did very well this year. Kudo's to him.

My hat is still off to the Saint for his plays. It takes knowledge no matter how you cut it. And $10,000 doesn't hurt either. Maybe that could go towards the next Lloyd: "Gold vs. Dow wager."

    Thanks!

As for the "reality" of the GAME...it's just a game. What else can we do that's coin related other than buy or read? The contest offers an opportunity to look at ALL auctions, ALL types of coins coins and study what the trends, history and rarities are. Whether it reflects real life isn't the purpose. It's about learning about coins and I have learned volumes about just about every series from paticipating in this the last two years. To those who may have sat out, TRY IT! It is not a s easy as you think. image

Roadrunner....regarding the "real world" I believe that what I did buy is of record in threads here, and I think that they will all be home runs. Remember "Buy straw hats in January?"

My sales I won't even mention them, but suffice it to say I did VERY well. VERY well.

Kudos to anyone who had the patience and commitment to play all year and crack the 2MM barrier. That's a serious challenge.

  • Yes. Hats off to you Saintguru. If you don't mind me asking, in generic terms, what are your favorite picks for 2008?

You pick from what's for sale more than what your crystal ball says. I could have a field day with the FUN sale...anyone could.

At the risk of keeping a thread alive for the purpose of the discussion of U.S. Coins and the interests in them... did you buy the reverse proofs from the U.S. Mint this year , Jay ? image
I ended up in about 160th place with sixty grand I made off of widgets.
    There's a reason I use the name " Y-Eye-Work"...
I think what you did in the world series of trading is really phenomenal. Turning a million into six million for a reward of ten grand is great. That so many guys did well speaks volumes of the coin market.

    Kind regards,

    Joe

I agree it is a great way to learn about coins and started off doing just that in the first round but found I do not have nearly enough time.

Guess maybe I will try again in the next round.

I didn't buy any modern coins, proofs etc. I bought coins that were in auctions or in private sales that I heard had sold to legit collectors.

Tassa, unfortunately in this instance, works for a coin dealer as an office manager. It was a technicality but a violation of the rules this year. She's a great person and a friend and I felt bad that she was disqualified.

Since she was actually in 1st place when Q1 ended I sent her the prize.

I will say this for the man,

I had a few questions to posts that he made. With no special requests he answered them via PM. He is a quality guy with a special insight - and more deserving than most.

    Congrats.

Is it true that some of the coins were actually bid on and bought in order to increase the PCGS value charts?
