PCGS Guarantee Submission Dilemma

I recently submitted an 1879 3CN PR67CAM to PCGS to have a spot check done on what looked like PVC on its obverse. I received a phone call this week saying I had two options after they determined there was damage. I could either receive $1300 straight out, or $1000 and receive the coin back in a PR64CAM holder. I should state that I think both of these offers are very fair as I originally acquired the coin for less for my type set. So now I must decide whether to try and find a replacement for the set or take the downgraded 64. What would you do?

Guess I'm naive but I didn't think PCGS put damaged coins in holders?

I'm not familiar with the set enough to know how difficult the piece is to obtain another one. Are you worried about that spot? Do you think that you'll always look at it and be upset by it or can you live happily with it?

I personally would be happy with the cash and a PR64CAM. The cash could buy another piece for the collection. But then again, I'm not a guy that needs the finest known. I'm happy just having a really nice piece.

I'd be inclined to take the $1k and the coin back as a pr64cam.

  • I'd take the $1,300 and start over.

If you take the $1,000, and the downgrade, I think that every time you look at that coin you'll be fixated on where the PVC used to be.

They didn't. I believe the spot grew after slabbing. It actually looked active when I submitted it. I had previously posted here on the forum to get opinions on what it might be. This was my first experience with PVC. The thing about this is, I won't be able to see the 64 and how the neutralized spot looks before making this decision.

If you can replace the coin for $1300, I'd take the $1300 and run. Let PCGS decide what to do with the coin.

If you can't, take the $1k and keep the coin. You can then determine if the coin should be resubmitted to PCGS or any other TPG.

Take the $1300, and find another coin... That spot could continue to grow, and get worse.

Once a coin's problem is pointed out to me, all I see is the problem and not the rest if the coin.

It depends. What's the value of the coin after the downgrade? Does it exceed the $300 difference? If so, take the coin and the grand. If not, take the $1300.

  • Why couldn't u take the coin back, then crack it and submit it again? Post a pic here. I bet someone would buy it for $300 or more. Maybe I would.image

I agree. On my Greysheet bid is $320 in PR 64 for type. Yours is a cameo and would likely bring more on eBay. Of course you may not want to hassle with it for an extra $100 but, seeing as I could eBay another coin with little effort, I would.

My guess is the coin in a 64 CAM holder cost more than $300. I've sent several coins to PCGS under the grade guarantee and they clean up pretty nice. I'd take the $1,000 and the coin.

by recently, do you mean September or October? I've had a coin with them since mid October and still no word about it.

Take the grand and the PR64CAM coin. At least you'll have a filler until you can replace it.

If they are willing to reholder it, even at a lower grade, I wouldn't say it is necessarily damage but it obviously affects the grade.
I don't know the series but I am thinking I would take the $1000 and the coin and then sell the coin with good pictures and description.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Take the $1000 difference and take the coin back.

Heck, I'd be interested in buying that coin once you have it back.

This was sent in in early November.

Thanks to all for your responses. I think I will be taking the $1k and the coin. It was beautiful less the spot so I'll take my chances with it.
