1832 Half Dime ~~ Grade Opinions

Purchased this coin for a song a couple of years ago with a BIN on Ebay. The seller was liquidating a small 'Bust Coin' collection and had it listed as a half-dollar. When I informed the seller that it wasn't a $.50, they responded that it really didn't matter to them... What grade would you put on the flip?

From the pics provided, I would say XF45. Possible shot AU50, if there is luster hidden or luster that is not apparent in the pics. Sounds like you got a good deal - the price of these little puppies has really run up in the past few years in this grade range (along with the dimes and quarters).

I will concur with Realone's attribution - LM-7/V9 - and with Walkerguy21D's grade - EF-45. I am curious, however, at ahooka454's comment about not seeing a price increase in the Capped Bust half dimes. I, too, have been collecting them for quite some time (about thirty years), and in that time we experienced virtually no price changes at all. EF examples were priced uniformly at $100, and AU examples were priced at $200 across the board, for all dates, of course excluding the attributed R5 and better examples. It was only recently that EF examples have moved up to $150 or more, and AU examples are now $300 or more. The CDN Gray Sheet, Coin Prices, Trends, and the PCGS Price Guide have all reflected similar increases in the past year. More importantly, the prices asked by dealers, either at their shops, on line, or at coin shows, also show similar increases. The good old days of $200 AU Capped Bust half dimes are well behind us now.

  • Mr.Half, i was only referring to the lower circ. pieces, soryy for the confusion. all the au prices and ms prices seem to be skyrocketing. i just think for the circ. pieces the price is still really affordable.you have a better grasp on these... in the last 3 years since i started looking at the circ. pieces the prices have only marginally gone up it seems. This may be short lived but i hope its for awhile. i think they are all good prices right now though.

Like I said, in this grade range, ie XF-AU. Haven't looked at lower grades, so I can't comment.
I do know that I've been helping multiple people build type sets, and finding capped bust half dimes, dimes, and quarters in XF+ to AU has gotten tougher and more expensive the past few years.
