1955 Bowman GAI - Worth the Risk??

With all of the heat GAI has received lately, it seems like the slabbed cards prices for GAI (especially vintage) have taken a tumble. Based on that, is it worth the risk to remove GAI slab from a card and take the chance with PSA that the grade will come out the same?? Case and point...I was eyeballing these, but, geez....a $3-4000 risk on the Mantle if it comes back as an 8. Any thoughts???

  • If it was worth it, the seller would have already done it....

    .

That's exactly how I feel about it. The seller has 1731 cards listed that are graded by PSA and 181 cards listed that are graded by GAI and I would suspect that the GAI cards just wouldn't cross over as he has probably tried.

GAI graded quite a number of '55 Bowman baseball that appear to have been trimmed and reglossed (and possibly also doctored in other ways). Marc S. (mikeschmidt) can give you thorough details and what to look for.

    I wouldn't take that risk.

We had 2 1955 Bowmans graded by GAI, 8.5 Campenella and 8 Aaron. A dealer friend showed us that GAI graded alot of cards with surface wrinkles as straight cards. Either they were spooned out or GAI didn't believe they should hurt the grade as it was there from the factory, a belief that PSA does not share. Both cards we had contained 1 or more surface wrinkles. I think all 55 Bowmans graded by GAI in high grade came from a specific submitter and had these issues.

    Good for you.
  • The Mantle card was offered on Ebay several months ago. I remember because I bid on it in the hopes of winning it specifically for a crack and resubmit. I think it maxxed out around 2300... It was won by keppler. Looks to me like he just decided to flip it.

I've had great success with early GAI slabs. The Mantle has a good look to it and I would take a crack at it if it was much cheaper...Don't go anywhere near the newer slabs...
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?
