Just an average non controversial coin question

For someone who is not by any means an expert in the coin world but wants to learn, my question is

Is there really much difference between the top 3 grading companies and their grading standards when it comes to modern non gold coins ie.Ike's, washington quarters,Kennedy halfs? Just curious.

    Yes.
Quite the gap between PCGS and NGC & ANACS.

I rail against the follies of the Kool-Aid in the general case as much as anyone, but these days, I think PCGS is clearly is the tightest *currently* when it comes to standards on grading moderns. The "old" ANACS used to be brutally tough on moderns, but the "new day" at ANACS (as opposed to the new new day) pretty much ended that.

In other areas, such as circulated classics, the differences in standards are far less pronounced.
  • I like good coins but PCGS is on top right now. Yes a major difference in standards...

I thought you said "non-controversial". This is definitely a controversial question image I don't necessarily go along with popular sentiment regarding the "top" grading companies.

As an illustration, I offer this:

Current eBay auction totals for ALL coins from each service (the percentage of "70" grades in parenthesis):

    ANACS: 962 (0.3% "70")
    ICG: 704 (26.6% "70")
    PCGS: 6,491 (4.1% "70")
    NGC: 6,768 (18.5% "70")

Yeah, but ANACS has mostly become a dumping ground for problem coins. It's not so much that they are tougher on the 70 grade as it is that so much of what they grade these days is cleaned, whizzed, polished, damaged and/or AT'd.
