Same here. For $5, I expect Priority Mail. I charge $3 and for that you get a protected coin in a padded mailer with Delivery Confirmation.
I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector. Recipient of the coveted "You Suck" award, April 2009 for cherrypicking a 1833 CBHD LM-5, and April 2022 for a 1835 LM-12, and again in Aug 2012 for picking off a 1952 FS-902.
Nope because I knew about it before going into it. If the item had been lost, and they didn't reimburse, or ship another one, then I would.
The $5 should buy shipping, packaging, and insurance, in that case and imho. I don't care if the person buys USPS insurance or will "self-insure" and guarantee it on it's own.
Tell the seller that you never got the coin and that you need the tracking number.

I disagree. It's not very lame. It's a matter of opinion. I probably wouldn't leave a negative, but I wouldn't be happy with the seller either. In fact, I might e-mail him this thread so he can see what other coin collectors think of being grossly overcharged (percentage wise anyway) for shipping. There's simply no way "handling" fees are over $4 to send a plain white envelope.

But do you think the seller should leave positive feedback as soon as they are paid?
no,because buyers have the option to move on when they don't like shipping cost.then they think about giving neg feedback for something that cost up front.i never leave feedback till i get it.
doh, Regardless of whether SilverEagles92 received the coin in a plain white envelope with a 58 cent stamp or a padded envelope with $4 stamp, the coin (apparently) arrived safely. SilverEagles92 was disturbed enough on receiving his coin safely that he thought it necessary to post a thread debating whether a negative feedback was jusitifed. That is lame. Extremely lame.

You can't include a URL in feedback. I think "Coin received. Paid $5 shipping for envelope with .58 postage." Would accurately describe the buyers experience.

What effect on your selling will a neg have if he retaliates?
Is it worth it?
I do however ask for insurance money back if they ship uninsured and I paid for insurance. I also write the so called "self insurers" and ask for a copy of the so called private insurance coverage policy, which I never receive, so I do not bid.
I also let them know that they need a license to sell insurance.

I still disagree that it's extremely lame. That's why I said it's a matter of opinion. Obviously, I'm happy the coin got to me safely...however I'd be very unhappy that the seller is making an extra $4 on every coin he sells by blatantly ripping people off. At some point, a buyer has to stand up and say, "Wait, I got screwed, how many people has he done this to?" SilverEagles92 wasn't distrubed at receiving his coin safely, he was disturbed about being ripped off. Granted $4 isn't a lot of money, but it's the principle of the thing. If anything, SilverEagles92 should be happy he got the coin at all....sending a coin in a plain white envelope is ridiculous!
Again, personally I would NOT leave a negative in this situation, but I can see how someone would. That's my 2 cents.

I can vouch for that, as I've left similar comments (great transaction but coin not packaged well) with a Positive and they responded with an undeserved negative. It's BS, but that's how it is.
I leave positive feedback immediately when I get payment right away.
No reason to neg. Why would anyone neg for something they already knew going into the purchase.
For raw uninsured coins I stop looking at coins when the shipping goes above $4.50. It costs me less than $.50 to buy a bubble mailer and cardboard Safe-T-mailer. The postage charge is $1.40. That's $1.90 for total shipping costs. $3.10 for handling fees is excessive.
Obviously, I'm happy the coin got to me safely...however I'd be very unhappy that the seller is making an extra $4 on every coin he sells by blatantly ripping people off.
doh, WTF? How is the seller blatantly ripping anybody off? The seller listed the $5 shipping fee. Perhaps the seller decided that the effort it takes him to purchase envelopes at the store and drive to a mailbox/post office is worth $4.42? That's his perogative. Again, as long as the buyer receives the coin safely and in a reasonable amount of time, he shouldn't get to bellyache about how his "principles" have been violated....are you kidding me? The unfounded righteousness of those agreeing with the notion that the seller did something wrong here is unbelievable! (...stick with me and your righteousness will ALWAYS be founded. )
The bottom line for me is that the shipping charges are clearly stated in the auction. If the coin was delivered to me in a timely manner and without damage, I could care less if he taped it to a pigeon and sent it.

This is why the feedback system is flawed. Even if you get shafted, you are hesitant to leave negative feedback for risk of a retalitory neg. Things would be much more accurate if feedback was held in "escrow" where neither participant could view it until both were submitted, at which time they would be posted simultaneously.

I think you're being pretty unreasonable. Say a seller doesn't sell a lot, so they buy a retail bubble mailer: $1.05. Postage on 2.5 oz runs $1.47. Maybe the seller includes delivery confirmation purchased at the post office $0.75. At this point, you're up to $3.27, not including a Safe-T-mailer (maybe they just recycle a little cardboard stock instead) and not including any insurance. We're already at "excessive" by your standards. If the seller insists on insurance ($1.65 for $50 coverage), then we're up to $4.92 and you've already written off the hypothetical seller who is offering shipping at cost and has already lost money on shipping simply due to his gasoline expenditure for the trip to the post office.

There are a lot of "ifs" in there. I have no problem with a seller charging $5 for shipping IF it really costs something close to that (insurance, well packaged, delivery conf. etc.) If the seller states up front it's $5 and then sends it in a white envelope with 58 cents of postage on it....that's not cool in my book.

Ok I already said uninsured so you can drop the $1.65. I also did not specify delivery insurance, so you can drop the $.75 charge. So you can drop the $2.40 in insurance and delivery fee. Please read the post to which you reply next time. A bubble mailer goes for $.40 at Walmart, $.45 to $.50 at a grocery store. 4"X6" bubble mailer.
$5.00 minus $1.47 for postal charge and $.50 for bubble mailer equals $3.03 in handling fee is excessive. Gasoline expenses... Current national avg is $3.00/gallon. At 25mpg post office 3 miles away totals $.36, considering you do not stop by on the way to work or grocery store. (.36 being included in handling fee)
