Ryan Carroll or Kevin Lipton. Both are extremely successful and highly respected in the business while one is one of the best graders in the business today and the other is one of those folks who can say anything and everything without impunity.

There are very few luminaries in this biz. If they got to that point, it was probably from stepping over a lot of people along the way. I couldn't even pick someone from a major auction house. No one gets to the top of this heap in coins by being a great all-around humanitarian. Being aggressive and cut-throat at times is part of the game. If you play fair all the time you don't survive as a rule. Being popular, a sage, or well-known is one thing. Being a true mentor of the hobby and walking the talk during one's entire time of service is another. I think the money issue gets caught between the good deeds that should be done. Once profits and livelihood are made the priority, the good-guy stuff goes out the window.
This would be a very short list imo...esp on the dealer side. There might be a lot of collectors who qualify but they would not be well known to the entire hobby....but they could be luminaries in my eyes.
I've been saying for years that I want to be Bob Julian when I grow up. I think he will go down in history as the greatest numismatic writer of all time. Tom DeLorey

Tom---You're no slouch yourself when it comes to numismatic writing. Keep up the good work.

Thank you. I try, but know when I am outclassed. TD

Actually I would be myself but a kid of 8 again. A time when a 50 cent Indian Head cent purchase was exciting. And I knew basically nothing other than the fact that it was a cool old coin. It seems the more i know the less exciting it is and the more costly the purchase
