red-brown copper preferences

Ok, something I've been wondering about for awhile. What's the general consensus on preference of red-brown designations for copper? Do most prefer as much red as possible, so the coin is "almost a full red", or do most prefer as many greens, purples, blues, magentas, etc mixed in there? Personally, I prefer red browns with other colors mixed in, but maybe that's just me. image

  • I like them all if they are original. why pay alot more for a red that will turn red brown someday.

As much red as possible for me. I don't care much for color. But red or colored or whatever, the coin must be original.

More brown than red, since they are natually heading that way anyway.

A few other natural colors, such as greens or magenta is a bonus.

When I first became interested in IHC's I loved the magenta look on IHC's. As I learned more about coins and copper, I began to pay more attention to strike versus color. Today I think a hammered brown IHC looks better then a very weakly struck red.

Though to answer your question on how I feel today about color, I prefer RB's to not have any additional colors. (However I am the type that now enjoys the look of original woodgrained toning, I collect what I find to be attractive, and have found my tastes change over time)

I still have a couple of those slabbed megenta IHC's that I'll try to take shots of in the next day or two.

Strike and die state are very important - and usually won't cost much more.

For RB I like even colorations, not too streaky. A near brown can be a very attractive coin. In fact a MS brown or near brown set is easier to match colors.

  • Collect the coin not the color.......just kiddding.

I lean toward brown, mostly because of price. The red ones will be brown someday......
