Yeah, it's a gorgeous set. I have several of the non-auto'd Thomas versions. Definitely a beautiful set.

In 1998 Elite had a beautiful insert set called Back to the Future, the first 100 of 1500 being auto'd. Another gorgeous modern set.

    Ryan/Maddux auto

I happened to pull a card like this one back in the day and still have the card.

I love that card and have wanted one since I first saw it. In fact, I was in pretty serious negotiations with him before finally deciding that I couldn't buy it. They have sold for anywhere from $700 to close to $1,000 in the auctions I've tracked.

like Ripkenintheminors said...it's a fairly sought after set, and that's one of the more sought after cards...that's a fair asking price.

I would offer him $600.00 and go from there

Hmmm this one looks very nice as well, Arod Card.

  • << <i>I would offer him $600.00 and go from there >>

He dropped his BIN as low at $715 on the last listing. He may go lower, but I doubt it.

Would you be grading it if you hit it? Both cards would be 8's.

Gonblot...if I remember correctly, they had to produce those single auto ARods because Cal wasn't able to autograph all of the original 150 they had planned for him to sign? Something like that...there is a story behind it.

Someone remember? What was the story behind it?

  • Offering more advice, the card is extremely condition sensitive. Most of the PTT cards like that have dinged corners.

Most definitely I would get them in a PSA holder ASAP. Just deciding which one I like more.

The Arod single auto card may even be a 7. The back upper right corner / edge looks like it has a fold. A fold is always a 7

Not trying to talk you out of it, just leading you down my thought process on the card. Do you want the card or the autographs? If you're looking for some dual signed stuff you can get it for less at Ironclad Authentics. Again, not trying to talk you out of it, just thought it was worth asking.

Never heard that one. Doesn't Cal also have a single signed from the same set?
  • BunchOBullBunchOBull Posts: 6,188 ✭✭✭
Yes he does. I think each of the first 150 of each card was supposed to be autographed, but something fell through on the Ripken/Rodriguez card. They ended up creating a single signed ARod and single signed Cal to meet the 150 auto quota. Something along those lines.

edited to add: I could have my stories way crossed. I'm remembering this from the mind of a 13 year old, a decade ago.

Kind of a little bit of both. The Dual auto part is awesome and I am collect anything with A-ROD. Not to sure if I can afford the asking price, I'll put a best offer tonight and see.
  • I'll see what I can find out about it.

  • FWIW there are two other dual signed Ripken/ARod cards from other sets added in the last 4 hours.

Wow...I was remembering that set incorrectly, to the extreme. So every player had a single auto card. Maybe the dual auto Ripken/ARod is just a shorter print run. I swear I can remember something out of the norm about it.

It was always my understanding that the cards were all serial numbered to 1,500 but only the first 150 were signed.

    Offer: $600

Lets see what the seller says.
  • GonblottGonblott Posts: 1,951 ✭✭
    Good place to start.
  • If memory serves correctly, I may have gone as high as $650. Either way, good luck.
  • FWIW I see the 05 Bowman's Best was sold on a $450 offer. Didn't realize it was a BGS 9.5

Considering the three dual autographed cards that were posted last night, we can know that Cal and ARod have signed a minimum of 250 dual autographed cards. Does anyone have any idea as to how many cards both of them have signed on card?
  • ripkenintheminorsripkenintheminors Posts: 2,186 ✭✭✭
Based solely on the fact that the card has sold for just under $1,000 in the last year, I'm surprised it's sitting there at $685.
  • I'm curious if anyone here landed the card. Final sale price was $677.50.

Pretty sure the sale price was less than what I offered for the card.
  • RogermnjRogermnj Posts: 1,809 ✭✭
I was the under bidder at 667.50. He e-mailed me earlier telling me he would end the auction to sell it for $715.
  • RogermnjRogermnj Posts: 1,809 ✭✭
The only reason I didnt bid higher was because this guy sells lots of graded stuff. Didnt want to get the card and for it to have major problems.
If it was in an 8 holder i probably would have given him the 715

  • << <i>The only reason I didnt bid higher was because this guy sells lots of graded stuff. >>

Totally agree. I asked him the same question and can't recall the answer. I may have to look up the reason that he gave me.
  • RogermnjRogermnj Posts: 1,809 ✭✭
That card is so awesome that it is one of the few cards where I would be happy to own it in an 8. But any modern card in a 6 just doesnt do it for me. I think the only modern card i would enjoy owning in a 6 would be the 1990 topps george bush card. Or maybe one of the original Flair masterpieces 1 of 1's of a star player..
  • Found the reason. Since I don't want to copy an e-mail, here's the summary:

He grades rookies because he doesn't see any benefit in grading non-rookie cards due to the fact that a bad grade hurts the value when they don't get the grade you think they should get.
  • RogermnjRogermnj Posts: 1,809 ✭✭
Nice answer. I thought the whole purpose of grading was to give the card the grade it "deserves". I didnt know they only give rookies the grade they deserve.
  • Considering that I have non-rookie cards graded, I don't agree with the answer at all.
  • After checking some of the correspondence, I guess he could afford to take a hit. Considering the offers I made and the ones he said that others made away from the auction, he lost some cash considering the ebay and possibly PayPal fees. I guess he thought that people would at the very least bid what they had offered. I would've bid my offer but circumstances were totally different and the auction drug out way too long. It had been posted several times at a BIN and I'd wager that a lot of people got turned off. In addition, I made another purchase after realizing it was going to be next to impossible to work out a deal both of us agreed on.

There's another auction I'm currently wathing for a card I'd love to have so I sent a message with a very fair offer. Unfortunately for me, the seller never got back with me. However, if the Colts lose tomorrow I'd wager that I'll immediately get a message asking if I'll buy it at the price I offered.

You learn something every day -- I hadn't heard of this set. Not sure I'd want to sink serious $$$ into a modern product, but then I know jack squat about this stuff. It is nice-looking, much better than many modern sets appear to me.

I let the auction go too.
