How Does A Expert Coin Grader Grade A Bullion Strike Coin Is There Really A Perfect Coin?

The reason I ask this is I was looking at my PCGS and NGC 2006th 20th Anniversary Burnished die Ms 70 coins and both have little deep dings in the coin. The PCGS coin has 2 little dings they are noticable under 10x loupe in the skirt above the 2006 date.

The NGC coin has one ding on the arm reaching towards 10:00pm and is noticed under 10x loupe. Now again I don't know if the coin had a hole in the plancet before it was struck, but is there really a perfect coin?

The dings you refer to are most likely tiny struck thru's that occur normally during the minting process and in my opinion, are found on nearly all coins, 70 grade or otherwise. That is why THERE IS NO PERFECT COIN, and the word perfect should not be part of any definition for the 70 grade.

It is perfect if there are no blemishes visible with a 5x loupeimage

I have 70's that don't have a single visible blemish at 20X. Are they perfect? Damn right they are! image

  • Very true about the 5X . I once looked at some shield nickels with
one of those 30X microscopes with the twin eyepieces . Yikes! what
looked like a flawless unc to the naked eye or 5X , showed a surface
that looked like moon craters with small specks of green .

70's don't exist until a grading company says they do.

The same way he grades any other coin.

The MS69/70 line is tough for sure, but, no different than the MS67RD/MS68RD line for Lincolns or the AU58 / MS63 line for a classic coin or the MS66 / MS67 line for a Wash quarter, etc, etc, etc,

That's like asking "How many chickens does it take to change a light bulb?" Answer: Chickens don't change light bulbs.
