Ricky: Sorry to hear about your grading lose. Usually a submission like that will have one or two hits.
If you plan on selling one of those 1970-S small dates, please let me know?
Or, is it too soon and painful to think of that yet?

I does ruin your day when you get a bunch of low grades back, I really have to watch out not to take it out on other people around me. My dog runs when he hears a rattling PCGS boximage-----------BigE

    Yeah,
My wife can judge how I'm doing buying & selling on e-bay and with PCGS grades by my mood!

Right now PCGS is tighter than tight. I've decided to put off any crossovers until they stop trying to make $500 for each coin allowed in their holder. Actually, if they had that service I'd consider it - $500 submission fee but they promise to grade with their eyes open.

The flip side is that it's a great opportunity to acquire some super coins. I purchased a MS64 1875 Trade Dollar at FUN that I swear is a 65. I'd much rather pay PQ money for PQ lower graded coins than have to pay for low end slop!

I too sent some in recently, and like you was less than pleased with the results. Some were clearly Cameo, yet didn't receive the designation.I believe PCGS is deliberately giving lower grades to coins,to keep low populations on the higher grades.

  • Don I to sent in some washingtons Cracked out of 69 flat holders and in return I got 66 Flat back Franklins in old green holders sent in 67's flat some returned same grad some in 65 flat Beautiful cameo coins?????
  • I sent in some MS Jefferson nickels at the beginning of December. They were from '38 to '50. There were a total of 10 coins. of those 10, 7 recieved a 67FS, 2 got a 66FS, and the '38 got a 67. Needless to say, i was quite happy with the results. I guess you just gotta get 'em on a good day. I have a 43-D that I think would be a nice 66FS, maybe a 67FS, and as a little bonus it has a rev. lamination. Should be a nice piece to add to my daughters nickel collection.
Buy the coin, not the holder!

    Racer:

Your experience parallels many others (including my own). I agree with tradedollarnut earlier, you either wait until things get a little more consistent, roll the dice again and submit, or get another opinion from another company and start the crossover game.

I have found no benefit to cracking out coins to submit to PCGS. Its safer to keep them in the original holder (including PCGS). A couple of months ago I made the mistake of cracking out a PCGS coin and it came back 2 grades lower (I thought it go go higher). Suddenly there was a three point difference in what I thought was and what PCGS thought the coin was. I'm not that bad.

I've got an almost complete PCGS graded set of Kennedy mint states and a complete PCGS graded set of proof Kennedys. I've compared the graded coins with some raw coins and submitted them. When they came back, there was an average of a 2 point lower grade assigned to the coins and they appeared identical! Now, I won't send my coins in to PCGS, I'll only purchase my PCGS coins from others who have either been luckier or also bought their coins from others with good luck and have upgraded. I don't know if I'll renew my PCGS subscription this year, seems like a waste sine I won't be sending in any coins!

I purchased a lovely (as lovely as they can get LOL) Ike 40% silver Dollar in MS68 some months ago in the older green (early to mid 1990's) insert. It split when shipped in the mail. Right smack between the housing of the coin and the holder. The holder fits perfectly back in where it is obvious that they belong together and it is not contrived. I will not resubmit the coin for reholdering since I will lose the green insert (according to PCGS) as the green insert does not supposedly fit in the newer holders. That does not seem right to me. But I merely taped the holder back up. It is amazing....the coin is clearly not exposed to the air at all.
