VAM Question 1885-P Ideas

What is your best online VAM resource for identifying VAMs? I have been using VAMworld as I saw several links in old threads. The problem with VAMworld is that there are not very many photos and I can't seem to find what I am looking for.

While I have you here... I have an 1885-P Morgan that has a nice die clash on the reverse. I can see the eye, nose, mouth, chin, front neck line, and the V of the lower hat. There is also a die crack that runs through most of the letters on the reverse perimeter. Any VAM numbers I should look at?

  • Ashmore's site has lots of photo's by date of newly listed and other VAMs.... between that and VamWorld, I've been able to Vam out just about all my Morgans.

    Hope this helps,

Thanks for the link. I like the photos on Ashmore's site. I am still unable to figure out my 1885-P Morgan. I have added photos in case anyone can help. Thanks

What you're seeing on the reverse are clash marks, which are extremely common on Morgans and very rarely result in a separate VAM number identification. This coin isn't one of them. Because this isn't one of the 1885 pitted reverse or strongly doubled date VAMs, it pretty much means that whichever VAM it is is a minor/insignificant one.

    Outstanding photos by the way.
    When in doubt, don't.

Thanks for the info. I thought everything was VAMed. This helps.

It is, but the clash only counts if letter transfer occurs. For example, VAM-6 might be a double date. A VAM-6 with a clash with no letter
transfer remains VAM-6. If letter transfer happened (E reverse, etc); it becomes VAM-6A.
