For those of you looking for something to read over the holidays, you might want to check out "A Nation of Counterfeiters," by Stephen Mihm.
It is the story of counterfeiting in the United States from the founding of our country until the Civil War when the federal government began to issue greenbacks. That development, along with the establishment of the Secret Service at about the same time, greatly diminished the role counterfeiters had played in the nation's economy up to that time. It's a fascinating story of broken banks, shaky currencies and shady characters. The book is well written, and I recommend it to any numismatist, especially if you are interested in the monetary history of the United States.
