Draped Bust Half Opinions - 1806 Knob 6 LG Star

I like the look of this Draped Bust Half. It lacks the cleaned look many of these in similar grade possess. However, I am no expert on this type and would love to know what the specialists think of this coin.

    Sweet coin!

    I'll say XF40.
  • That is a nice looking Draped Bust half !
Luster showing on both sides, nice coloration, some hairlines in the right obverse field.
    This is a 1806, Knobed 6 type.
The picture is rather small for Id' ing the marriage but with the recut "T" in Liberty. (Obverse)
    I would say it is an 1806 O-105 R-2.
If it has a fine die crack through 180 and all the stars on the left to "LIB" then it would be
the "a" model or later die state.
Also comes with a die cud at the top of Lib in later stages.
The weakness on the reverse in the right cloud area is normal for this marriage.
This is a condition rarity coin as it is, and is not found that much nicer grade wise.
    I'd give it 2 thumbs up !
  • Much luster remains. And remember these come weakly struck. I call it at least XF45, and it is quite nice, because as you said, they come cleaned, and "washed out"

Well, I tried to buy it and it sold this morning. I suspect as a result of my post here.

Thats probably what happened, if priced as type, as this is a sleeper. Premium Numismatics has a PCGS XF40 for around 3K of the same variety.

The coin looks really nice, and hard to find in better grades. What was the price, who was selling it?

I cherried my O-105 unattributed, crossed in holder from NGC45 to PCGS45, slightly less wear than this coin.

I don't think the price was any steal. It was slabbed VF35 (but looked better than many 40's I see) and was $1,500. This is not a scarce variety....

It does look like XF40. The variety is listed as R.2, this is probably an accurate rarity with quite a few in damaged lower grades, but very difficult to find in XF without problems. This finest is AU55, currently being auctioned a Heritage.

  • I owned that same coin. It was slabbed in an old NGC holder at vf30 and I sent it into PCGS and it was graded VF35. It was a beautiful coin, I should have kept it
