Are there any set that are Unimprovable?

braddickbraddick Posts: 24,165 ✭✭✭✭✭
Any Series: Any sets that have reached the top? Unless a higher grade coin is made- it's reached it's 'perfect limit'?
If not, what set is closest to reaching this goal?

I don't think that any of the sets have reached their theoretical limit, but some are close.

The Bruce Scher set of proof CN 3¢ has an average grade of 67.04 and the top possible is 67.12.

Without looking, some the modern bullion sets have probably reached their max.

Pop1's 50 piece commemorative is far and above others.
  • TradeDollatNuts MS Trade $ are all the finest known, not improvable. His PF are impressive too, almost on par w/ his MS.

Earlier this year, when I had purchased outright the #2 and #3 PCGS MS Wash Quarter silver Sets (#3 set just what I needed from it and it was unregistered at the time, but roughly tied Registrycoin's #2 Registry Set) and I had the #1 Registry set on consignment to me (where I bought the coins I wanted as well), I recall I had a PERFECT SET OF PCGS SILVER COINS available to me (perfect at that time of course) with one big caveat: the 1932(d) (pop 1) and (s) (pop 2) were coming up for auction at Heritage. I chose to intentially sell some of the low pop and pop -1- coins from my holdings rather than go down a course of (potential) "personal financial ruin" to win those last (2) quarters at any cost image But, by the numbers, this may have been the closest anyone has come to perfection, especially on a set involving 83 coins. And, I do regret selling a few of those low pop jewels!! image Wondercoin.

Even though my MS set is maxed out at the moment, I do know of a few coins that are potential future upgrades if they ever get into PCGS holders. What I really like is that 14 of the 18 are Pop 1 coins!!!!!

I'm currently working on my website (it's about half done) that will be posted at www.tradedollarnut.com. I intend to publish a condition census of all MS trade dollars.

tradedollarnut That is one heck of an accomplishment! I figured it might be a set or two of SAE's that would top out, but Trade dollars?
    Congratulations!
Where do you go from here?

Mitch, Any regrets? That would have been an awesome set of Washingtons. Unbeatable.

I'm adding to the set in various ways - neat items like 4 of the first 5 trade dollars ever minted along with a letter from the director of the mint to his friend. Each coin has the number 2, 3, 4 or 5 hand scratched above the eagle's head. I intend to frame this and hang it on my wall.

I am trying to complete an uncirculated chopmark set. I only need a couple of coins to do so.

I haven't decided if I want to improve my proof set. They are all pretty 66's (except the 84 which is a cameo 65). I'm just looking for eye appeal from here on out.

And, of course, I'm always trying to improve the MS set. I just purchased a coin I never thought I'd see - a 73CC in NGC MS65. I also know that the Knoxville 1878-S is nicer than my coin, tho currently graded the same. I'd sure like to see the Proof 69 trade dollar, also!

"Mitch, Any regrets? That would have been an awesome set of Washingtons. Unbeatable."

Pat: If you don't "regret" selling great coins, then you likely have -0- "collector blood" in you at all-right? There are a few quarters I wouldn't mind having back image I spoke with a major dealer tonight about possibly getting (2) coins back by him approaching his customer he sold the coins to. I won't pay $89,000 for the 1932(d) in PCGS-MS66 so "perfection" is out of the question anyway unless that pop goes up on that 32(d) from here. Also, I do believe one day the Registry series will be a 151 coin (or more) set (1932-1998) and this might be the "most important" manner in which to collect the Washingtons. I sold off/broke up the #1 Clad Quarter set earlier this year, so getting those coins in perfect grade across the board will also not be easy! Some of these clad quarters may prove quite scarce in the years ahead. For example, to date, PCGS has never graded a single 1976(p) quarter in MS68. This would be a highly collectible coin once one is made and the price might astound many folks. I would be a strong buyer of a coin like that, but have heard nothing that such a coin is even close to being "popped" image Wondercoin.
