Who sells low grade Chain cents?

stmanstman Posts: 11,352 ✭✭✭✭✭
PCGS holdered of courseimage. Now, when I say "low grade" I kinda mean very low grade, as I can't afford much anything else. What
I might be able to afford probably wouldn't even show the date. But, I still think they're neat because.... some you can still see the outline of the
portrait, and the chain on the reverse that seem to be struck up higher. Any links? Thanks!

Check the auctions (Heritage, Bowers and Merena, and even eBay), there might be one that'll show up occasionally in AG or G. Tough to find any lower without damage. If you want one in an ANACS holder, that should be easier and more affordable as ANACS is the only reputable TPG that certifies damaged coins.

Chain cents without any details (corrosion, tooled, damaged etc) will be very hard to find, let alone in PCGS holders.

Heritage has a great payment plan that allows you to pay over 6 months with a little interest added on. I am almost finished paying off a F12 damaged chain cent as we speak. A very easy way to pay for a pricey coin.

    Good luck!

  • really. i never heard of a payment set up like that. wow, that will help with a 1909 matte vdb. i havent really seen to many lower grade chain like described. ag3 and up seems to be the easiest to get.

what chain variety are you looking to get?

Probably a 3 with periods would work. But what I see in holders so far seem to be grossly over-graded.image
I see one in p4 with no kind of date showing at all. Just a fact of life these days I guess.

I hope I'm not missing anything but Chris McCawley, Tom Reynolds or Doug Bird are good candidates to check. Reynolds has a net G-4 for $5500. Early copper cents has a FR2 that was taken out of a PCGS AG3 for $4k. They also have a net G5for $8000 which makes Reynold's coin look pretty good. There are other out there if you do a simple Google search.

I wouldn't overlook NCS slabs, I've seen some decent low grade stuff in those slabs. "Corroded" looking is actually normal for some varieties.

Many years ago ( something like 40 years image ) I found a half of a really worn coin while hunting for arrowheads. I could just barely make out a chain - just like with the coin above. Wish I still had it but I sold it in the 70's for a couple dollars ( thinking it to be totally worthless ).

Are more Chain Cents still out there to be found? Maybe I need to break out a Metal Detector and give it a go. My brother found a 1853 3c Silver near the same area of the field during the same time frame. Maybe there's a small cache in the area? One can only dream. image

And I have a ghost of a Flowing Haired Lady on the obverse. Of course if not for the chain on the reverse, people would not acknowledge the image on the obverse.

Gosh, I just saw one in a PCGS G-4 holder, and for the life of me, I cannot remember where. I will keep looking...

There are five Chain cents in the Stack's sale of the Franklington Collection on January 7. There's a PCGS G-4, but I like the looks of the ANACS VG Details coin much better.
