Found while searching mint sets - 74-D doubled die obverse half dollars

I just bought a group of coins and in the group was 5 1974 mints sets. Two of the five mint sets had the 74-d ddo half dollar. I remember years ago searching rolls for this variety and never found one. I will get pictures up when I get a chance (wife has me on kitchen duty to help with X-mas).

Nice find! The 74-D is quite pronounced, and is one that can be found in the mint sets. Now if you are fortunate enough to get a high grade one...... better than MS65......

Bought a roll of 1974-D Kennedys at a local coin show recently and found my first DDOs from a roll!

    Found 6 in that roll.

They look a bit different from the mint set pieces--strike is not as sharp and a later die state.
But a nice surprise as I have found the 74-D DDOs for 20+ years in mint sets and never in a roll.

They should grade MS64 or MS65/do not have the scuffs on the cheek and shield like the mint set pieces.

The mint set DDO's are a fright usually. Choice is easy enough but gem is quite scarce.

Congratulations on finding the 74-D Doubled Die. I have searched quite a few Kennedly rolls over the years for silver and always check the 74-Ds. However, I have never found a DDO in a roll.

Many years ago-before these were picked over as badly as they are today-I was finding maybe one for every ten sets I looked at. They don't bring nearly as much now as they used to except, as cladking says, in very high grade. Most of the ones from Mint sets show a nasty scrape across the shield on the eagle. I can remember selling MS63s for well over $100 in Teletrade in the early nineties. It's a relatively common doubled die-as are most doubled dies and other varieties that can be found in Mint Sets. It's still a nice doubled die, tho.

    Congrats!

It only took me about 200+ mint sets to find a couple! image

BTW, you done with that "kitchen duty" yet?
