Depends on the severity of the problem. Got pics?

Problem coins are always problem coins.

Unless they are really really rare (the ones oyu mention are tough but not impossible) the problems will have a significant impact on price.

  • Yes, it will have a big impact on value, ESPECIALLY on the 1801. Expect to get only a fraction of it's normal price.

I'm of the opinion that 1801 is one of the over priced dates in the early eagle series and I don't care what grade it is. The quarter eagle might come in fair as people in general don't seem to pay real value on these coins as much as in other series. Hence I'll just say that it really depends on the individual coin and what it's going for. image

I sold an 1801 eagle in 2005. It was in a PCI holder MS 60 with altered surfaces. She had probably the best strike I have seen but was devoid of luster. I saw no evidence of smoothing but the surfaces almost looked too smooth. I parted with it for $10.5K. Despite the problems, I miss her. That was a learning experience too. I had a $10K reserve and ebay charged me $100 for the reserve - ouch!!

That said, I think I got a fair price.

These are just rough guesses, mind you. I would have to see the coins in hand to be more accurate.

    1801 $10: $3500-5500.

1805 $2.50: $3000-$3500 or so. There is a very similar coin on ebay right now for $3799 with no takers. He has relisted it at that level a few times, I believe.

I tried to find pics of my 1801 but think they went with a crashed hard drive last year. Also, I had to relist my 1801 half a dozen times so I probably nixed the reserve after the first listing since it cost so much.

edited to add the long lost pics:
