To slab or not to slab...

Say you go to the bank and ask for a roll of pennies and when you get home
you find they are all wheat ears in AU condition and each cent is worth about $100,
according to the Red Book. You decide to sell them on Ebay; do you spend the $18
each to get them slabbed or do you sell them raw?

Hard call, while those PCGS will bring more bidders and bucks, it may be by only the $18 it cost you. BTW, its more than $18 per coin. More like $23 once you add the shipping, ins., etc.

Depends on the coin, but I think if slabbing is necessary, ANACS would probably be better. (cheaper)

I would first really re-evaluate my opinion on the coins. You might want to pick out the few real AU58 lookers. As for slabbing a $100 coin...you have to consider that you will have about 25% of the profit locked up in the slabbing fees, it might not be as profitable as it first appears.
What year coins are we talking here?

was this hypothetical or do you have dates in mind?

  • dates in mind are d and s mintmarks from 1909 to the late 20s minus the usual suspects.

Go back to the bank, get another roll of the same stuff, then you'll have 100 coins and can do a bulk submission for about $8 each. image

I would get them graded, but that's just me and my O/C nature.
    When in doubt, don't.

If in fact such a roll were obtained from a bank teller, I'd be back in a flash to scoop up every other roll they had available.

Good idea but bulk submissions are only good for MS coins and after 1935 for Lincolns. image

If this seriously happened, I'd go back for more and give that teller (if female) a big big hug.
