Well, isn't he a shining example of the pathetically stupid American for the world? Thrifty is passing on the candy, soda and cigarettes entirely. If one must indulge, there are Costco and Walmart, right?

This story likely contains elements of exaggeration. Think about it ... 13 years earlier he purchased another truck with his spare change. So let's assume he had 13 years to accumulate the $25000 for the new truck. If he worked 50 weeks per year at Chrysler, and worked five days per week, that's 13 x 50 x 5 = 3250 work days. That would mean getting $25000 / 3250 = $7.70 per day in change from the vending machines.
How much would you have to spend at a vending machine, and what would you have to buy, in order to rack up $7.70 in change EVERY DAY. If he bought coffee 2-3 times per day, and always paid with a $5, maybe getting $3.00 in change each time, I guess that would do it. That means putting $15 per day into the vending machines x 3250 days = $48750.
Somehow, this seems ridiculous. No wonder American auto companies are suffering ... this guy must have been on break constantly.

And the union protecting his job from his laziness also negotiated pay well in excess of that $48K amount then too. Unless Kokomo is where the top Chrysler engineers or front office business types sit, I pretty much doubt it, even with the abuse of unions todays.
(And yes, there are pathetically, stupid Americans out there. Lots of them. They make the rest of us look bad. And I won't even get into presidential elections.)

<< <i>why not keep in the bank to collect interest and have more money >>
Cute story and an Excellent point!
Just imagine the interest that could have been accrued over a 13 year span! I'm think another 5 grand if not more.
You suppose he threw any Cheerios dollars into those coffee cans?
Edited to add: Of course, now that I think about it, those IKE dollar rolls I have laying around aren;t accruing any interest either!

yeah, be smart and not indulge in that much crap. Or if you have to have that much junk and soda then buy it in bulk at a place like Sam's.
