Is there a way to put a counter into a thread?

BECOKABECOKA Posts: 16,961 ✭✭✭
I have done this in the registry sets as they allow basic html.

Is there a way to do that in the forums? it would be nice to see how many people actually view some of this stuff.

All of the +'s aside, is this something worth requesting from Carol? Is there a reason collectors universe does not include this information like other boards?

  • Some message boards have built in counters.

    Some allow HTML

    This one does neither

A few other non coin forums I use do this. It is nice to see that while sometimes your thread does not generate responses, it does get alot of interest(views)

Another feature I really like, about some of bb's is that when you get the email saying that the thread has been replied to the link takes you back to that reply (page) and not the very beginning of the thread.

Other than those 2 facts, I really enjoy this forum alot.

well there is a way if you think about it for a bit and get creative.

step one. upload a pic to your own controlled server where you can
    access raw apache logs.

anyone who views that pic will leave a log entry stating XXX IP just
    grabbed the pic.

then using a script that checks those logs every minute rename a pic
on your server with the current count.

php-gd could be used to do this on the fly instead of having a zillion
static pictures with numbers in it.

it would take me about an hour to make that work and heh, it would
not be worth my time or effort. i just do not care enough.

but to summarize, it is very doable and quite easy if you work with
unix, servers, php-gd, crontab, shell scripting, etc..

Great idea but a couple steps too much work. image

I thought I saw something like this a couple years ago on this forum, unfortunately it sounds like they might have done something like you suggested.

If you run your own web server, it shouldn't be hard at all. The counter can be just an image. The url of the image is actually a cgi that builds and delivers the image. The cgi is the counter that references a single number sitting in a file that is incremented on each call. You have to hande caching but otherwise that is it. However, if you run your own server and you want the counter information a grep of your log with a pipe to wc -l works just fine. Can even see where the people (or their web proxies) all are.

Then, there might be a free service that will do just that (deliver a counter image and increment it) out on the web. Haven't looked as I don't have the need and there are probably a number of spyware sites that lure people in with such things, like they do with screensavers.

    I've often wondered that myself.
I'd like to know how many look at posts but do not post any replies.

This could be useful in the search field to narrow one's search to most popular view threads, etc.

some look at the same thread many times so a high count wouldn't necessarily be a clue as to how many unique lookers there are. i bet carol might know.image

Ahh but you can have a counter count unique users from their IP address. This is the way that the counter I use on my registry set works. You can either choose page hits or individual user hits. image
