HOW DO YOU SELL A COLLECTION

I have about a 10 to 15 year collection of mint and proof coins together with some gold coins such as a $20 1928. In addition prestige and other stuff like the 4 gold coins in proof condition. Who do you think would be a good person to see to unload the entire amount without getting shafted. Thank you

  • Zayda. I would try and get some pics of the coins and post them here. Check them in the PCGS price guide to give you some idea of their value and I am certain that a member (probably more!!) here would help you out.

It's very hard for anyone to have a reasonable idea without at least seeing some pictures.

  • Buy yourself 'A guide book of United States coins' AKA the 'Red' book. this will give you an idea as to what you have and a general value. You could then break the collection into similar items and try selling them like that.

    In general, it depends on:

    1. What you have
    2. How quickly you need the money
    3. How much leg work you want to do yourself
    4. How much it is all worth (ballpark)
    5. Whether or not you require a one-stop solution

I agree with all 5. Your best advice would be 1 coin at a time. (on ebay)

Consult a grey sheet (Coin Dealer Newsletter) and you can quickly figure out what bid is on the entire group. Your offers on common mint and proof sets will typically be 10-20% less than bid. A $20 Saint will sell for close to bid level in most cases if you know what the grade is.

Most of what you have is in the modern realm. There are several BST'ers who seem to specialize in that. Put a list up on the BST and see what kind of offers you get. Most local B&M shops pay fairly well on this kind of material as the values are well published and there is lots of activity in it. One stop shopping at your local B&M should get an offer no more than 20% from what you could do if you sold each and every item for the maximum possible value.
