I think there are many groups of fine coins around, that we have no knowledge of--no Registry participation, no faces to go with the phone bids, etc.

I will not reveal the name, as it is private. And the coins are gold. That is all I can say.

It shall remain unknown to the world, until the owner is ready to reveal it's contents.image

    Loye Lauder

She had the great fortune to be one of Abe Kosoff's big customer in the early 1960's before he moved out west. She wanted to get a type set of everything in the red book, including colonials plus any lots of neat patterns and a date set of cents. She died in 1964 and her collection was sold by Doyle Galleries in 1983 in a real bad market. Many bargains were had by all! right, Mr. Eureka?

Indeed there were! That was one of my favorite sales of all time. I'd gladly pay ten times my invoice total to get the coins back!

  • The Knoxville collection contained some very nice pieces, but I'll go with Andy on the "Lady" Sarah Sophia Banks American coin collection, which was actually donated by Lady Dorothea Banks (wife of Sir Joseph Banks - Sarah's brother) into the British Musuem in the fall of 1818.

I'm doing research on this donation by Lady Banks. If anyone can provide some insights, it would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I already know about the Banks 1792 Half Disme being switched out.

David Cassel collection of postage currency patterns is the finest and most complete of anyone in the country.

He is not known outside of the pattern collecting area of the hobby in which he has specialized in the last 10 plus years.

He has also written a great book on the postage currency patterns in which they are highly valued by their readers.

This is an interesting question because I know of collectors and or collections but have no idea what their names or collection titles are.

For instance there is a prominent Indian Half Eagle collector that spends major bucks when a top pop comes to market, the only reason I know if him is because I knew the underbidder who spoke with the representative after the auction.

Maybe not completely appropiate here, but you hardly here anything about the Law collection of Half Dimes. Some sets are lately being registered at PCGS, but before that there was only the sporadic mention in a coin description of Legend...

I do know that collection includes the 1870-S, but other information about the seated half dimes included is very sparse.

  • You can easily add the Robert Schuman collection of Hard Times Tokens, and the Dan Hamelberg collection of numismatic literature to the list.
