They cost $25 plus the cost of grading at the time and you could add a message to the label such as "Happy Birthday 1997" or "Double Die Reverse" or something similar. They were larger than the regular slab and came with a cloth pouch with a draw string and the PCGS logo. Due to their large size, they were unpopular and PCGS droped them after a couple years. Most were reslabbed into the normal size slab and they are now quite scarce. They are collectible and can bring a good premium in the marketplace.

Okay, that one has me baffled. I have never seen a doiley rattler. All the doileys I've seen were the second generation "slab in a slab" variety. I wonder if the outer shell was removed?
<< <i>Russ, nope that's a genuine transitional 'doiley' in a rattler slab... see the butt crack at the top of the rattler. >>
It wouldn't be "transitional" since there was a slab variety in-between the rattler and the doiley. It is either a PCGS mistake, or somebody removed the outer shell. Note that the reverse label is completely different than a rattler.
I believe that if you break off the outer ring on a doily or other second gen slab you are left with a rattler. I've seen one pretty badly damaged and about to come off before.

That the first Doily Rattler I have seen too........
I have 2 doilies same as this -with ring attached, and several ratlers and a few rats with the outer ring- no doilies without rings- cert 3's will tell the story...
The only PCGS Regency holder I ever held in hand was an 1893-CC Branch Mint Proof Morgan that John Albanese had in his inventory in 1997. Could have purchased it then for $50K.
Good thread, and the folks who are saying that the dollie rattler is just a PCGS 3 with the outer band removed are correct. PCGS 2, 2.5, 3, and 3.5 are all just regular rattler shells with and extra plastic band placed around them. The band is not attached to the interior rattler shell and can be easily broken off.
PerryHall has the story right about the Regency slabs. For the extra $25 you could put two lines of text on the slab of your choosing with up to 22 characters each. No one answered Broadstrucks' question about when they were produced. The information I got from HRH was 1992-95. There has been some evidence though that it might have been a slightly longer period but I have no confirmation of that.
The easiest Regency slabs to find are the ones from the Danny Kaye collection. A lot of the coins including low value pieces were slabbed in Regency slabs. Easiest is a relative term though, they are still very seldom seen.
Since my book came out and awareness of them has increased, the dollie slabs are becoming more available but they are still scarce. I can now typically find one or two at larger shows. (100 - 150 dealers)
If you would like to post this information to the thread ATS please do,
Here's another PCGS slab type I have never seen anyone comment on on this board. I think it's called the prospector series or something like that. The Cal Fractional gold people I'm sure know about it, I almost bought one a while back just to have a piece of gold and a cool slab.
Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony. Will’sProoflikes
Does anyone have a picture of the doily rattler with the outer ring in tact? I thought they just got rid of the rattlers after gen one but now it is sounding like it stayed for a while.

The gem mint state Elephant Token colonial coin which sold in the Eliasberg auction in May, 1996 raw was later slabbed in a PCGS Regency holder as MS66 RB, so HRH's date estimate is wrong by at least one year.

I think you're confused.
Rattlers did last one generation only, and so your comment that they 'stayed for a while' is simply incorrect.
Any "Doily rattler" is (as has been described by multiple people) simply one of these with its outer ring broken off:

I see what you meant now. In that sense, the rattler continued as a component of the next generation slab, but those slabs with the outer ring added are not referred to as rattlers.
