if you can view the coin in hand, that's the best way to look for hairlines. A magnifier and some light will quickly tell you to what extent the coin is hairlined. Common die marriage (1833 LM-7).

It's a little white for a coin of that age, but I cannot say for sure that it has been cleaned. Check for luster and hairlines, both are clues on whether it has been cleaned.

  • Nice looking 1833- I'd guess VF-35 or XF-40. The reverse is really nice with good detail on the Eagle's wings and head. Take that sucker outside if the Sun is shining and rotate it. Look at it from the edges of the coin and roll the edges with your fingers while looking at it with a loupe or magnifying glass- if you see patches of hairlines, it's been cleaned- if not, submit it!
You probably already know this, but this is how someone explained it to me (looking for old cleanings)- and it has really helped me save on bodybags.

Cleaned or not, it's a nice looking coin. Where'd you get her?

I second the notion. It's collectible and that's good enough for me. Of course, I've been known to dine with drunkards and homeless folks image
