Cleaning pre 1933 gold coins

I am kinda new at this and need to ask you experts.....When buying a raw coin, is there any way to visually tell if a coin has been cleaned. I have seen some in slabs that look o.k., but are marked as cleaned. I want to avoid paying a lot of money for a coin and send it in and it turn out to be cleaned.
