How is numismatics pronounced?

There is a raging debate in my family. There are too sides:
One side witch thinks it is pronounced num-is-ma-tics,
the other side says num-is-maticks.
Which is correct?

Comments

  • The first way is correct, with a long "a".

    DITTO..

Shoot, now I can't decide, if you put the long a in the first one it sounds like the second one. image

I reckon that the second way is with a short "a" like "nu-miss-mutiks" which is the wrong way.

Today I was asked some security questions and one was "what is your favorite hobby?" I said new-miss-matix. Big pause on the phone. I asked "you don't know what that is?" I told her. She replied that she thought it had something to do with medicine.

You haven't seen raging debates until you enjoy a holiday with Longacre's in-laws. I am a lawyer, I married a lawyer, my father in law is a lawyer, my sister in law is a lawyer and she married another lawyer, and my other sister in law is a lawyer, who, surprisingly, married a lawyer. Then throw my other sister in law from Seattle who works at Planned Parenthood and is so liberal that she makes Longacre look like a George Bush-lovin', ultra right wing conservative, and the sparks truly fly around the dinner table. image

  • And the etymology of the word is Greek. Darksiders win again.

I had to listen to it say loupe. Never having heard someone pronounce it, and me having only purchased several on the net, once thought it was pronounced something like La-ow-p, as in Van Gogh louped off his ear.

Noo - mizz - ma - ticks. The ma sounds like a baby goat or a little sheep.

Conversely, we are Noo - mizz - muh - tists.

  • i like this post, no drama,

i like them all, i get looks like i am someone when i use the word numismatist. at 25 thats nice.

to each his own. i think theres one right way, but everyone says it how they feel comfortable with. nothing worse than trying to speak of something and not know what your saying.

It has potential. I wouldn't write it off just yet.

Back when I worked for the ANA, they hired a nice your lady to work at the reception desk and the poor thing just simply could not learn how to say the word. They had to transfer her to the membership department.
