A coin off freshly polished dies- 1910 Matte Proof Lincoln- newp

My latest newp, a 1910 Matte Proof Lincoln, bought from a guy who just got it back from PCGS bagged for Altered Surfaces. When I got the coin, it was extremely unattractive, looking to be a Red/Brown coin, with a dull look to it. I was attracted to it because it shows the diagnostics better than any other coin I have ever seen, almost visible to the naked eye. I decided trying some acetone wouldn't hurt to make the coin look better. I used a Q-Tip and gently took some acetone over the surface. Before long, my Q-tip was green and the coin was looking better and better. I soaked it in acetone for a while and now I think this coin might slab. It will be apart of the next submission I send in. I did manage to take some sweet pics of the diagnostics of this coin.

  • Nice pics of die polish lines. I think I can even see the one between U & S on the full obverse pic. Why do you think they BB'd it for altered surfaces? Do they look altered, or was it just ED?
  • im relatively new to acetone on coins? it doesnt look like it damaged it but does it alter the surface any?

im into the mattes and am intrested for a number of reasons.

thanks for the awsome photos. i have a zoom scope, is that what you have and if so what kind of cam?

Tyler- I think it BB'ed because before the acetone cleaning, the coin just looked "off" the coating of what I assume was PVC. It looked "muted", the luster and the color. The toning on the Brown was completely hidden by the PVC. BTW, yes, that is a polish line you see in the pic.

Adam- Acetone is used to conserve/clean coins and (if done properly) does not effect the surfaces of the coin. If you do a search of the boards, you can see what it does and the proper ways of using it. Definitely make sure to practice A LOT on inexpensive coins before trying it one something expensive (like a MPL). I wouldn't risk ruining a coin (especially a MPL, I'm as big a fan as you are of them) if I didn't. I used a stereo-microscope and held the lens of the camera to the lens of the scope and pushed the button. It does a pretty good job.

Nice images Paul. It does have the appearance of an early strike and from what I can tell by the pics, should have no problem being slabbed. That will be a nice little submission when you send this along with the 1915. You got quite a bargain on both. You might even say "You Suck"!!image

what original packaging did this coin come in?

it must have sat in an album for many years why did it not tone?

it sure looks like a nice coin and the color looks more like a penny
then some i have seen lately.

sweet coin. thanks for sharing it.
